Full Job Description

The Town of Superior seeks an experienced, collaborative, service focused professional to serve as the Chief of Police.

Our community

Superior, long known as a mining community, is experiencing revitalization of the Resolution Copper mine, just outside the town limits. The Town has a public/private partnership with Resolution Copper for public safety services/first response. Many families residing in Superior trace their roots back through three generations. With mining making a return, and numerous opportunities for economic development, the future is bright for Superior. A state highway runs through Superior linking Superior to other Pinal County and Gila County communities.

Police Department Mission

It is the mission of the men and women of the Superior Police Department to be good neighbors, public servants, and community partners. Superior's Police Department members are the guardians of our community and strive to be masters of their chosen profession.

The Position

The Chief of Police reports to the Town Manager and serves as a key member of the Town’s Leadership Team. This exempt position leads a team including sergeants, police officers, detectives, records clerk, administrative assistant, and police volunteers. Together they comprise a proud and professional force that works diligently to provide excellent police services in partnership with the community.

By employing its community policing/problem-solving philosophy, the department strives to work with residents, businesses, and all stakeholders to maintain community viability. The department is a progressive, innovative, and community-oriented policing agency committed to ensuring the Town’s quality of life.

The Town is seeking a strong, hands-on leader with solid ethics and integrity who has the ability to focus on teamwork, responds promptly to staffing requirements, and implements strong organizational development initiatives and modern community policing approaches. The Chief will be positive, energetic, and capable of working in a collaborative manner. It is expected that the new Chief will have strong communication skills, utilize community policing, provide solid leadership, and have a personality style that encourages and supports others within the Department and the community.

The Chief will be a strong leader and an outstanding administrator. The successful candidate will be team oriented, work with an open door, relate well to the rank and file, be an integral part of the community and lead by example. The Chief will provide consistent communication with and outreach to all areas of the Town, promote citizen involvement and develop a successful relationship with the schools.

The Chief will also demonstrate key personal traits which include being respectful and sensitive in dealings with a diverse community and staff. The Chief will also develop a management style that includes strong ethics, honesty and inclusiveness. The Chief’s passion for police work in service to the community will be a hallmark of his/her daily endeavors.

Superior enjoys working relationships with Federal, State and County law enforcement agencies. Superior Police is dispatched by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. The department has almost daily interaction with both the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and the Arizona Department of Public Safety due to a multi-jurisdiction environment. Experience working in a collaborative multi-jurisdiction environment is a plus for applicants.

Desired qualifications

Ideally, the Town seeks an individual with at least 10 years of broad and extensive law enforcement experience. Individuals with command and administrative experience are encouraged to apply.

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in police science, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field is a plus. A combination of college or university course work, or other law enforcement professional training and a history of progressive law enforcement assignments may substitute for a bachelor’s degree.

Also sought are training and experience in supervision and leadership. Skills, experience and training in all aspects of local law enforcement including, but not limited to patrol, investigations, traffic, crime prevention and administrative areas.

A conversational ability in speaking Spanish is also a plus for applicants, but not required. A working knowledge of applying for Federal and state grants is also a plus.

The Police Chief is on call at any time and is provided a take-home vehicle. Ideally, the Town seeks an individual that will, within six months after taking the position, live within the town corporate limits. Because of sometimes limited housing opportunities, it is negotiable for the chief’s residence to be outside the town limits, but within a distance such as the Chief could respond to the town from home within a reasonable amount of time (it would be the goal for the Chief to eventually live within the town limits).

Must possess or be capable of obtaining an Arizona POST police officer certification. The successful applicant should possess strong administrative, financial, operational, and organizational skills, along with solid public relations/community policing experience.

Ability to present complex information and subject matter in a format that is concise and understandable

Pay and Benefits

The Town of Superior offers a competitive benefit package that includes:

Salary: Negotiable – starting scale $88,244 to $97,068, depending upon experience
