Overview

TL;DR: $55k / Cabot, AR / Remote after a year. - Overkill Helpdesk

Standard Computer is looking for a senior, experienced Tier 3 Systems Engineer to serve as the top of our technical escalation chain and a project lead for our dental practice clients. This is the role where complex problems land when Tier 1 and Tier 2 have exhausted their options — and where new client environments get designed, built, and stood up correctly the first time.

You don't need prior dental IT experience; we will train you on the specialized practice management and imaging software that runs a dental office. What we need is someone who already operates at a senior level across networking, servers, and infrastructure, communicates well, and can own a problem from root cause to permanent fix without hand-holding.

Responsibilities

Serve as the final escalation point for the Tier 1/2 helpdesk, taking ownership of the issues no one else could resolve and seeing them through to a permanent fix.
Perform root cause analysis on recurring and systemic issues, then build the documentation, runbooks, and standards that keep them from recurring.
Design and implement network architecture for dental practices — VLAN segmentation, firewall policy, routing, VPN/overlay connectivity, and multi-site WAN strategy for groups with several locations.
Lead the technical side of new client onboarding and dental office buildouts, including structured cabling and low-voltage scoping, server and workstation deployment, and cutover planning.
Build and maintain core infrastructure: virtualization hosts, Windows Server, Active Directory / Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365, DNS/DHCP, and backup & disaster recovery.
Own the deep integration and troubleshooting of dental practice management and imaging software (training provided) and the hardware ecosystem around it.
Implement and maintain security controls — endpoint protection, managed detection & response, network segmentation, and MFA — across the client base.
Mentor and develop Tier 1 and Tier 2 technicians, review their work, and raise the technical bar of the whole team.
Act as a trusted technical advisor to dental practice owners, translating infrastructure decisions into plain language they can make business calls on.
Document client environments, solutions, and project work thoroughly in our PSA/ticketing system.

Skills

Senior-level troubleshooting across Windows Server and desktop, with working competence on macOS and Linux.
Strong, hands-on network engineering: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, firewall and VPN configuration, and LAN/WAN design. Experience with prosumer/enterprise gear such as UniFi/Ubiquiti and Fortinet is a strong plus.
Server and virtualization experience (Proxmox, Hyper-V, or VMware), plus backup and disaster recovery design and testing.
Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID administration, Group Policy, and Microsoft 365 management.
Comfort working inside an MSP RMM/PSA toolset for monitoring, automation, asset management, and ticketing.
Scripting and automation (PowerShell or similar) to eliminate repetitive work.
Excellent communication skills — able to explain technical concepts clearly to non-technical dental staff and to lead a project conversation with a practice owner.
Ability to juggle escalations, project work, and mentoring in a fast-paced multi-client environment without dropping the ball.

Requirements

5+ years of progressive IT experience, with demonstrated time at a senior/Tier 3 or systems engineer level.
Proven ability to design and implement networks and server infrastructure independently — not just maintain them.
Strong networking fundamentals and real configuration experience with firewalls, VLANs, VPNs, and multi-site connectivity.
Track record of leading projects and acting as an escalation point for other technicians.
Excellent written and verbal communication and a genuinely client-facing demeanor.
Self-directed and accountable, with the judgment to know when to escalate, when to decide, and when to document.
A desire to go deep on dental IT as a specialization.

Nice to Have

Experience with dental software (Open Dental, Dentrix, Eaglesoft, CareStack, etc.) and dental imaging systems.
Background in structured cabling or low-voltage construction.
Industry certifications such as CompTIA Network+ / Security+, Microsoft, Fortinet (NSE), or Ubiquiti (UEWA/UECA).
Experience supporting multi-site, distributed, or remote-managed environments.
Experience in an MSP setting serving multiple concurrent clients.
