Full Job Description

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Chief Lending Officer to provide strategic leadership for all lending and card services operations. This executive role is responsible for driving sustainable loan growth, strengthening portfolio performance, managing credit risk, and ensuring an exceptional member experience while supporting the credit union's long-term goals.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative leader with extensive experience overseeing lending operations, collections, portfolio management, regulatory compliance, and financial performance. This position works closely with executive leadership and the Board of Directors to develop lending strategies, improve operational efficiency, leverage technology, and guide organizational decision-making through data-driven insights.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

60%

Lending Administration & Portfolio Management:

· Directs all lending activities from application through payoff, including loan origination, underwriting, processing, documentation, funding, booking, servicing, collections, and recovery.

· Develops and implements lending strategies designed to achieve prudent loan growth while maintaining acceptable levels of credit risk and portfolio performance.

· Oversee all consumer, mortgage, indirect, credit card, debit card, home equity, and other lending programs offered by the credit union.

· Ensures consistency and effectiveness of underwriting standards, loan pricing, credit policies, exception reporting, and portfolio management practices.

· Monitors delinquency, charge-off, recovery, extension, modification, and bankruptcy trends and recommends appropriate corrective actions.

· Works closely to connect lending and collections staff to establish effective underwriting and collection strategies that minimize losses while maintaining a positive member experience.

· Ensures lending operations are efficient, scalable, compliant, and aligned with organizational objectives.

· Maintains expertise and oversight of the credit union's lending technologies, including Portico, Loancierge, credit reporting systems, underwriting platforms, and associated lending applications.

· Develops key performance indicators (KPIs) and executive dashboards to monitor loan production, portfolio quality, operational efficiency, and risk metrics.

· Establishes departmental budgets and ensures budgeted goals are achieved while controlling expenses.

Credit Risk Management & Compliance:

· Maintains overall responsibility for credit risk management and loan portfolio quality.

· Reviews portfolio concentration risks, asset quality trends, allowance methodologies, stress testing results, and other risk indicators.

· Responsible for the review and management of all card related disputes, charge backs, and representments.

· Ensures compliance with NCUA regulations, federal and state lending regulations, Fair Lending requirements, BSA/AML requirements, and internal policies.

· Collaborates with Compliance, external auditors, and NCUA to promptly address all lending or collections related examination and audit findings

· Provides recommendations regarding lending and collections policies, procedures, underwriting standards, rates, and risk tolerances.

Leadership & Executive Reporting:

· Serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team and contributes to credit union-wide strategic initiatives.

· Provides regular lending and portfolio performance reports to the President/CEO, Executive Team, Board of Directors, Supervisory Committee, and Asset Liability Committee (ALCO), attending both the Board and ALCO monthly meetings.

· Presents executive-level analysis regarding loan growth, credit quality, portfolio trends, concentration risk, delinquency, charge-offs, collections effectiveness, and net interest income.

· Develops management succession plans and ensures qualified personnel are available for key lending positions.

·Builds and maintains strong working relationships with regulators, auditors, vendors, business partners, and credit union leadership.

Strategic Planning & Business Development:

· Assists the President/CEO in developing strategic, tactical, and budgetary plans related to lending growth, portfolio optimization, pricing strategies, and product offerings.

· Partners with Marketing and Retail Branch Services, and Call Center teams to develop loan promotions and conversational skills that support growth objectives.

· Identifies new lending opportunities, delivery channels, technologies, and process improvements to enhance member experience and organizational performance.

· Evaluates lending technology solutions, automation opportunities, AI applications, and digital lending enhancements to improve efficiency and member service within the lending, card services, and collections functions of the credit union.

Knowledge and Skills:

Experience:

· Seven to ten years of progressive lending management experience ideally within a credit union environment, including direct responsibility for loan underwriting, loan operations, portfolio management, card services, collections, and executive leadership.

· Experience overseeing the complete loan lifecycle from origination through collection and recovery is required.

· Experience managing regulatory examinations, audits, and lending compliance programs is required.

· Strong working knowledge of Portico core processing systems and Loancierge lending solutions is strongly preferred.

· Demonstrated experience presenting portfolio performance, credit risk metrics, and strategic lending recommendations to executive leadership and Boards of Directors.

Education:

· College degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

Interpersonal Skills:

· The ability to motivate or influence others is a material part of the job, requiring a significant level of diplomacy and trust. Obtaining cooperation internally with direct and indirect reports and externally with vendors is a critical part of the job.

Other Skills:

· Excellent communication skills. A clear understanding of Microsoft 365.

Location:

· On-site, located in Washington DC. - Not Remote

Pay: $125,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
