Pay Range: $82,904.79-$113,359.58 Annual

Placement for Traffic Engineer I, II, III will be based on certifications and experience.

Salary for Traffic Engineer I: $82,905 - $113,360

Salary for Traffic Engineer II: $96,610 - $125,262

Salary for Traffic Engineer III: $101,229 - $138,415

Are you ready to help shape the safe and efficient movement of people throughout a growing, dynamic community? The City of Arvada is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Traffic Engineer I, II or III. This role is responsible for the design, review, and contract administration of traffic and transportation projects — including street layouts, traffic signals, signage, striping, and other improvements within the public right-of-way. You'll work on both public infrastructure projects and private development reviews, ensuring they meet city standards while keeping safety and efficiency top of mind.

The ideal candidate has foundational knowledge of traffic engineering principles and is eager to grow their skills through hands-on experience. You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to everything from traffic signal timing to community-facing inquiries — all while helping Arvada plan for a safer, smarter transportation future. Essential Job Functions

Prepares routine requests for proposals, traffic and transportation studies, right-of-way acquisitions and design of traffic and transportation infrastructure projects.
Prepares routine public traffic and transportation infrastructure project bids and construction contracts.
Administers routine public traffic and transportation infrastructure contracts, which may include preparation of progress payments, negotiation of change orders, resolving contract payment disputes, and ensuring compliance with provisions in the contract.
Receives and responds to requests from the public regarding signing, speeding, street lighting and other traffic issues.
Reviews engineering plans submitted by others, recommends changes for reasonableness, to conform with existing infrastructure, or in conformance to the city’s Engineering Code of Standards and Specifications for the Design and Construction of Public Improvements related to traffic and transportation.
Enforces the city’s Engineering Code of Standards and Specifications for the Design and Construction of Public Improvements related to traffic and transportation.
Reviews and coordinates programs and projects with governmental agencies, districts, landowners, contractors, and consultants.
Assists in negotiation of acquisition of right of way from property owners.
Communicates and interacts with a variety of interests including but not limited to elected officials, government and quasi-government representatives, districts, landholders, developers, citizens and others as needed to perform the duties and functions of the traffic engineer I position.
Assists with development of specific routine project budget, oversees expenditures of the project funds.
Analyzes alternative solutions to projects to determine the most adequate and cost-effective solution.
Prepares traffic signs and marking work orders, parking permits and assists in reviewing temporary traffic control permits.
Assists with design, timing, and maintenance of traffic signals as needed.
Provides technical resources to other city departments to ensure that applicable traffic standards (City Code, MUTCD, CDOT) are met.

Other Job Functions

Represents division on various city committees and outside organizations.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Basic knowledge of principles and practices of traffic and transportation engineering, including standards, policies, and technical issues.
Basic knowledge of public works practices and procedures, planning, and administration.
Basic knowledge in preparing and negotiating routine contractor and vendor contracts.
Knowledge and ability in the application of standard engineering techniques and procedures.
Ability to prioritize multiple and changing work requests while meeting the many needs of the customers/users.
Ability to exercise sound initiative and judgment as well as make decisions within the scope of assigned authority.
Ability to effectively communicate information, both verbally and in writing, to support organizational objectives and interact with all levels of personnel within the city in a positive and cooperative manner.
Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.

Traffic Engineer I:
License & Certification

Colorado Engineer In Training (EIT) certification required or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment.
A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required.

Traffic Engineer II

License & Certification

Colorado Engineer In Training (EIT) certification required.
A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Work Experience Related

Two (2) or more years of experience in traffic or transportation engineering.

Traffic Engineer III

License & Certification

Professional Engineering (PE) License required.
A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Work Experience Related

Four (4) or more years of progressively responsible experience in traffic or transportation engineering.

Work Experience Preferred

Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) certification.

Education Degree

Bachelors Degree (BA, BS, BBA)

Education Major

Engineering or related field.

Education Required

Yes

Other Qualifications

Must obtain and maintain a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Certification.
Must pass a criminal background check and a driving record check, if required by the position.

Physical Demands

Minimal physical effort typically found in clerical work. Primarily sedentary, may occasionally lift and carry light objects. Walking and/or standing as needed and minimal.

Hazards

Minimal exposure to hazards are typically found in general office environment where there is rarely to no exposure to injury or accident.
