Job Summary

The Wildlife Technician provides technical support for wildlife management and restoration projects, including data collection, habitat assessment, and field surveys. This role supports interdisciplinary teams and assists in planning, monitoring, and implementing wildlife and habitat management activities for federal agency projects.

Supervisory Responsibilities: No

Job Classification: Permanent; Full-Time

Duty Station: Asheville, NC (Hybrid, 2 days minimum onsite)

Travel: Up to 75% (Travel required throughout the National Forests in North Carolina)

Duration: This role is anticipated to last 6 months, with the possibility of extension pending contract options.

Duties/Responsibilities

Conduct wildlife surveys, monitoring, and habitat assessments in support of project objectives

Collect, compile, and analyze data on wildlife populations, habitats, and ecosystem conditions

Assist in development and implementation of wildlife management and restoration projects

Map and evaluate habitat conditions and document disturbances or impacts

Support preparation of project plans, reports, and environmental documentation (NEPA/ESA)

Coordinate wildlife activities with other resource programs (timber, recreation, fisheries)

Serve as field lead or crew lead for wildlife projects, coordinating contractors or seasonal staff

Assist with development of annual work plans, budgets, and project priorities

Participate on interdisciplinary teams supporting natural resource management projects

Identify partnership opportunities and support coordination with agencies and stakeholders

Prepare technical reports, data summaries, and GIS mapping products

Maintain accurate field data, records, and documentation

Required Skills/Abilities

Knowledge of wildlife biology, habitat management, and field survey techniques

Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret biological and habitat data

Ability to work independently in field environments and support multiple projects

Strong organizational and communication skills for reporting and coordination

Experience conducting wildlife surveys and habitat assessments in forested environments

Familiarity with NEPA, ESA, and environmental compliance processes

Experience with GIS tools and spatial data collection

Experience working with federal agencies or natural resource programs

Education and Experience

Required: Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Management, or related field

Required: Minimum 2 years of experience in wildlife biology or related field

Required: Experience collecting, managing, or analyzing wildlife or habitat data

Preferred: Advanced degree (Master’s) in related field

Preferred: Experience in the Southern Appalachian region or similar ecosystems

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, and work in rugged outdoor environments for extended periods (up to 8 hours/day)

Ability to navigate uneven terrain, forested areas, and remote locations

Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, noise, dust, and field hazards

Ability to travel frequently to project sites

Maybe moderate lifting (~25–40 lbs) typical for field gear
