JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective
The Engineer in Training (EIT) supports the planning, design, modeling, rehabilitation, construction, and maintenance of wastewater collection system infrastructure. Under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers, the EIT assists with engineering analyses, preparation of plans and specifications, capacity evaluations, capital improvement projects, regulatory compliance activities, and field investigations while developing toward professional licensure.
Essential Functions
1. Assist with planning, design, and evaluation of wastewater collection facilities including gravity sewers, force mains, lift stations, and related infrastructure.
2. Perform engineering calculations, hydraulic analyses, and capacity assessments.
3. Support sewer system modeling and performance evaluations.
4. Prepare reports, technical memoranda, cost estimates, and project documentation.
5. Assist with construction drawings, specifications, bid documents, and permit applications.
6. Conduct field investigations, inspections, and condition assessments.
7. Review CCTV inspection data, flow monitoring information, and asset records.
8. Support I&I reduction and sewer rehabilitation projects.
9. Coordinate with contractors, consultants, and regulatory agencies.
10. Assist with project scheduling, budgeting, and contract administration.

Competencies

Software Proficiency
Demonstrates proficiency or the ability to acquire proficiency in software applications commonly used for wastewater collection system engineering, planning, design, analysis, and asset management, including:
1. Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams).
2. Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software such as AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
3. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software such as ESRI ArcGIS and ArcGIS Pro.
4. Hydraulic and hydraulic modeling software for wastewater collection systems, such as InfoWorks ICM, InfoSewer, SewerGEMS, or similar applications.
5. Asset management and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
6. Electronic document management and project collaboration platforms.
7. Utility data management, mapping, and infrastructure inventory systems.
8. Ability to learn and effectively utilize emerging engineering, data analytics, and infrastructure management software applications.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Employee may be exposed to all types of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold. Employee will be exposed to raw sewage, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud.
Physical Demands

The employee must have the ability to work outdoors, inspect construction sites, traverse uneven terrain, operate motor vehicle, perform field inspections using appropriate personal protective equipment. The employee is frequently required to drive; climb stairs; walk on uneven surfaces; climb or balance; bend; talk, hear touch and smell. The employee is regularly required to sit, squat, kneel or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type/Schedule
This is a full-time position. Primary days of work are Monday through Friday.
Travel
Frequent local travel is expected for this position.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Certification
· Current EIT certification.
· National Association of Sewer Service Companies (NASSCO) Pipeline Assessment Certification Program (PACP) certification.
· OSHA 10-Hour Construction Safety Certification.
· Geographic Information Systems (GIS) training or certification.
· Additional wastewater, utility infrastructure, or asset management certifications related to collection system operations and engineering.
Preferred Experience
- Internship, cooperative education, or professional experience in wastewater, water, stormwater, municipal infrastructure, or utility engineering.
- Experience with wastewater collection system planning, design, hydraulic modeling, asset management, or rehabilitation projects.
- Experience using GIS, CAD, hydraulic modeling, or infrastructure management software.
- Experience conducting field investigations, construction observations, or utility inspections.
· Familiarity with wastewater collection system regulations, permitting requirements, and industry standards
Professional Development
· Work under the mentorship of licensed Professional Engineers.
· Gain experience in planning, design, rehabilitation, and construction management.
· Participate in training, conferences, and professional organizations.
· Progress toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
· Pursue continuing education and stay current with industry best practices.
