Job Description
Under general direction of a lead worker or supervision by departmental administrator, maintains sanitation, husbandry and feeding program for animals; maintains record system for animals, facilities and supplies; assists supervisors & research faculty/staff with animal programs. Acts as lead worker over Laboratory Animal Aide and student workers. Established pattern of good work habits and performance with good interpersonal skills.
- Adheres to all OSHA and/or Ohio University required safety guidelines;
- Adheres to all federal, state, local and Ohio University policies, procedures, guidelines and regulations regarding animal research;
- Maintains sanitation programs for animal caging, equipment and housing systems;
- Feeds and waters animals;
- Cleans and sanitizes caging and equipment;
- May plan and supervise work schedules for laboratory animal aides and student employees;
- Observes, records and reports data on animals, and maintains records and inventory supplies for assigned areas;
- Assists research staff and students with animal research programs, repairs and maintains equipment, administers medications, collects specimens;
- Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Advanced working knowledge of inventory & supervision;
- Skill in restraint devices;
- Basic animal procedures and ability to understand and follow programs of animal care;
- Ability to read & write common vocabulary in sentence structure;
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, calculate fractions, decimals & percentages;
- Ability to apply principles to solve practical problems;
- Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, and pictorial form.
- Ability to work independently or with others;
- Knowledge of all applicable OSHA and/or Ohio University safety guidelines and procedures;
- Lift up to 50 lbs. on a regular basis;
- AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician Certification;
- Minimum 1 year experience;
- Subject to animal bites & disease; laboratory animal urine, feces and blood, dust, water & occasional steam;
- Exposure to sanitation chemicals;
- Weekend and holiday work required.

Work Schedule
This is a 40 hour per week position.
Primary Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8am to 5pm.
Weekend and holiday rotation will be required. Overtime may be required at times as well.
