Full Job Description

Mark C. Pope Associates, Inc. was founded in 1950 and is headquartered in Smyrna, GA. The company is comprised of four independent business units that distribute industrial products. The cleaning equipment division sells and supports industrial floor sweepers and scrubbers within the southeast United States. Mark C. Pope is currently one of largest distributor of industrial equipment for Nilfisk-Advance and Powerboss in the United States and has grown significantly over the past decade. Due to this growth, we have an immediate need for a Shop Manager/Mechanic in Smyrna, GA.

Position Summary

The Shop Leader is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Smyrna repair and prep shop, overseeing all equipment repairs, refurbishments, rental returns, and new unit pre-delivery inspections and demo preparation. This role is a working lead position — the Shop Leader performs hands-on technical work alongside a small team while also managing workflow, maintaining quality standards, and ensuring all work orders are accurately completed and closed in a timely manner.

The ideal candidate is a skilled technician who is ready to take ownership of shop operations, keep work moving efficiently, and hold themselves and their team to a high standard of quality and documentation.

Equipment Repair & Servicing

Perform diagnosis, repair, and preventive maintenance on a variety of industrial cleaning equipment including pressure washers, floor scrubbers, sweepers, and related machinery.
Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues; determine root cause and recommend appropriate repair solutions.
Ensure all repair work meets company quality standards and is completed within committed timeframes.
Test equipment before and after service to verify proper operation and confirm the issue has been fully resolved.
Communicate repair status and any unexpected findings.

Equipment Prep & Refurbishment

Inspect, clean, repair, and refurbish used and rental equipment to company-defined ready-for-sale or ready-for-rent standards.
Perform cosmetic and mechanical reconditioning on trade-ins and returned rental units prior to re-deployment or resale.
Maintain a consistent prep checklist process to ensure no steps are missed before equipment leaves the shop.

New Equipment Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI)

Perform pre-delivery inspections on new equipment prior to customer delivery or installation.
Verify all components are present, properly assembled, and fully functional per manufacturer specifications.
Document PDI completion accurately and flag any manufacturer defects or missing items for resolution before delivery.

Work Order Management

Open, document, and close work orders accurately for all shop jobs including repairs, prep, PDIs, and internal service work.
Record all labor hours, parts used, and work performed on each work order in a timely and accurate manner.
Ensure work orders are closed promptly upon job completion and submitted for billing review.
Flag open or aging work orders daily and communicate any delays or issues that may affect billing or customer commitments.

Parts & Inventory Management

Accurately pull and record parts used on each job to support correct work order billing and inventory tracking.
Receive and verify incoming parts orders; report any discrepancies or damaged shipments immediately.
Keep the shop and parts storage areas clean, organized, and in a safe working condition at all times.

Team Lead Responsibilities

Direct the day-to-day work of 2–3 shop technicians, assigning jobs, setting priorities, and keeping workflow moving efficiently.
Provide on-the-job training and guidance to less experienced technicians; help them build skills and work independently over time.
Hold team members accountable for work quality, documentation accuracy, and shop cleanliness.
Communicate staffing issues, performance concerns, or capacity constraints to management promptly.

Safety & Shop Standards

Enforce all company and OSHA safety requirements within the shop at all times.
Ensure proper use and maintenance of shop tools, lifts, and equipment; report damage or unsafe conditions immediately.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment; conduct or coordinate routine housekeeping and equipment checks.
Participate in safety training as required and ensure all shop personnel do the same.

Required Qualifications

3+ years of hands-on experience repairing and servicing commercial or industrial equipment; cleaning equipment experience (pressure washers, scrubbers, sweepers) strongly preferred.
Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and repair engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, and related components.
Experience completing and closing work orders accurately; familiarity with parts ordering and inventory processes.
Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
Prior experience in a lead or supervisory role preferred, but strong individual contributors with leadership potential will be considered.
High school diploma or GED required; technical training, trade certification, or manufacturer training a plus.
Valid driver’s license, clean driver record and ability to operate a forklift or pallet jack (training available if needed).

This is a physically demanding role performed primarily in a shop environment. The Shop Leader must be able to:

Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and crouch for extended periods throughout the workday.
Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. regularly; heavier items with assistance or mechanical aids.
Work in varying temperatures and conditions typical of a shop or warehouse environment.
Use hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely and effectively.
Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) including safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toed footwear.
