About the Role
Scopes Facility Services is seeking an experienced HVAC/R Mechanic with a strong commercial refrigeration background to join our growing service team in Atlanta.
This position is primarily focused on the diagnosis, repair, maintenance, and service of commercial refrigeration and HVAC/R equipment. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience troubleshooting refrigeration systems, compressors, condensers, evaporators, controls, electrical components, and refrigerant circuits.
You will work directly at customer locations, responding to service calls and performing preventative maintenance and repairs while maintaining a high standard of workmanship and customer service.
Key ResponsibilitiesCommercial Refrigeration – Primary Focus
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain commercial refrigeration systems and equipment.
- Service equipment including walk-in coolers and freezers, reach-in refrigerators and freezers, prep tables, refrigerated display cases, ice machines, condensing units, evaporators, and related refrigeration equipment.
- Troubleshoot refrigeration systems involving compressors, condensers, evaporator coils, expansion valves, metering devices, solenoids, pressure controls, contactors, motors, fans, defrost systems, and temperature controls.
- Diagnose and correct refrigeration system problems involving high/low pressures, refrigerant leaks, inadequate cooling, icing, temperature fluctuations, short cycling, compressor failures, and electrical faults.
- Perform refrigerant recovery, evacuation, leak detection, charging, and system commissioning in accordance with EPA requirements and applicable regulations.
- Perform compressor replacements, leak repairs, component replacements, system evacuations, and refrigerant charging.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical and electronic refrigeration controls, including relays, contactors, capacitors, motors, sensors, thermostats, controllers, and control boards.
- Diagnose and repair defrost and temperature-control issues.
- Identify opportunities for preventative maintenance and recommend repairs or equipment replacement when appropriate.
HVAC/R Service & Maintenance
- Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial HVAC/R equipment and components.
- Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, cleaning, adjustments, and operational testing.
- Diagnose HVAC/R equipment using electrical meters, gauges, temperature probes, manufacturer diagnostic tools, and company software applications.
- Replace or repair defective components, including compressors, motors, thermostats, controls, coils, fans, and other mechanical and electrical components.
- Perform system start-ups, equipment testing, and operational checks following repairs and installations.
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and manufacturer specifications.
- Ensure equipment is operating safely, efficiently, and within manufacturer specifications.
Customer Service & Field Operations
- Respond professionally to customer service calls and communicate clearly regarding equipment conditions and recommended repairs.
- Explain findings, repair requirements, and maintenance recommendations to customers in a professional and understandable manner.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment at customer locations.
- Accurately document work performed, equipment conditions, parts used, refrigerant added or recovered, and time spent on each service call.
- Complete service reports, work orders, photographs, and other required documentation using company systems and mobile applications.
- Maintain an appropriate inventory of commonly used tools, parts, and supplies.
- Work independently while coordinating with dispatchers, managers, customers, and other technicians as needed.
- Participate in an on-call or after-hours rotation when required.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, EPA refrigerant regulations, and applicable federal, state, and local codes.
- Properly handle, recover, store, and document refrigerants.
- Use required PPE and follow safe electrical, mechanical, ladder, lifting, and refrigerant-handling practices.
- Maintain required licenses and certifications.
- Keep service vehicles, tools, equipment, and work areas clean, organized, and properly maintained.
QualificationsRequired
- Minimum 3 years of hands-on HVAC/R service experience, with significant experience in commercial refrigeration.
- Strong working knowledge of commercial refrigeration systems and refrigeration troubleshooting.
- EPA Section 608 certification required.
- Ability to troubleshoot refrigeration, electrical, mechanical, and control-system problems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Experience using refrigeration gauges, vacuum pumps, recovery equipment, multimeters, temperature probes, and other diagnostic tools.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work independently in a field-service environment.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
Preferred
- 5+ years of commercial HVAC/R or refrigeration experience.
- Experience servicing supermarkets, grocery stores, convenience stores, restaurants, food-service facilities, or other commercial refrigeration environments.
- Experience with walk-in coolers/freezers, reach-ins, display cases, ice machines, and remote refrigeration systems.
- Experience with rack refrigeration systems and parallel compressor systems.
- Experience with electronic refrigeration controls and building automation systems.
- HVAC/R trade school, apprenticeship, or technical certification.
- State or local HVAC/R license or certification where applicable.
- Manufacturer-specific refrigeration or HVAC/R training.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry tools, parts, and equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds.
- Ability to work from ladders, lifts, rooftops, mechanical rooms, loading areas, and other commercial environments.
- Ability to frequently bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, and work in confined or awkward positions.
- Ability to work in hot, cold, wet, noisy, and other challenging environmental conditions.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, or participate in an emergency/on-call rotation when required.
