Full Job Description

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller – Grants Accounting, Budgets, and Compliance is a role responsible for grant and contract accounting, financial reporting and analysis for federal and state government grant-funded activities and compliance requirements. Position will be responsible for assisting with the develop of grant and contract budgets, monitoring budgets, analyzing spending trends – including personnel, benefits, and restricted and unrestricted funding sources. Also responsible for all month-end close entries related to grants and contracts, including salary and benefit allocations, indirect cost calculations and recovery, recurring entries, and accruals with appropriate reversals. The role will assist with annual budgeting process, forecast updates, and annual financial and single audits through preparation of schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation. Role will assist with general ledger accounting, serve as back-up for payroll processing and reporting, and non-grant related month-end close journal entries and monthly account reconciliations as needed.

Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities

Accounting & Grant Management

Serves as the primary finance liaison for grant reporting, compliance and reimbursement requests
Works with the development team; plans, organizes, and coordinates accounting and financial reporting for all grant-funded activities
Assists with the development of grant budgets, analyzing spending trends – including personnel, benefits, restricted and unrestricted funding sources – to ensure alignment with programmatic and operational objectives
Prepares month-end close entries related to grants, including salary and benefit allocations, indirect cost calculations, recurring entries, and accruals with appropriate reversals
Participate in grants management team meetings and scheduled grant kick-off meeting coordinated by development team; serving as primary finance liaison for government grants and contracts
Assists with the accounting and reporting of federal, state, local, and private grants and contracts; including completing drawdown requests

Financial Reporting, Budgets, Analysis, and Compliance

Assists the Chief Financial Officer with monthly and quarterly reporting to internal and external stakeholders; helps ensure monthly and quarterly financial reporting packets for Executive Leadership Team, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors are prepared accurately and timely
Assists and supports the annual budgeting process, forecast updates, and the annual financial and single audits through preparation of schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation
Assists with the development of grant budgets, coordinates with development and program teams on budget proposals and reporting
Monitors budgets, prepares and distributes monthly budget vs actual reports, and analyzes spending trends – including personnel, benefits, and restricted and unrestricted funding sources.
Ensures compliance with OMB Uniform Guidance and other funder requirements

Other:

Attend meetings, events, conferences, trainings etc. as requested by CIS of Georgia
Assist with day-to-day general ledger accounting, serve as a back-up for payroll processing, and month-end close deliverables as needed
Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Knowledge and Experience

Minimum Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
Masters degree in Accounting and/or CPA or CMA
Minimum 10 years of progressive nonprofit financial management experience, including leadership and supervisory roles
Expertise in nonprofit accounting, grant compliance, and audit preparation (financial audit and single audit)
Strong analytical and quality control skills
High level of attention to detail
High level computer skills in word processing, spreadsheet, databases, and presentation software
Training experience is desirable
Proficiency with accounting software (preferably Sage Intacct) and advanced Excel skills

Skills and Abilities

Strong knowledge of GAAP, OMB Uniform Guidelines, and financial regulations for nonprofit organizations
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to prioritize and maintain flexibility needed to meet the demands of CIS of Georgia and CIS local affiliates
Good critical thinking skills and ability to analyze
Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently without direct day-to-day supervision
Ability to meet time sensitive deadlines

Candidates must have own transportation, valid driver’s license, and automobile insurance as required under state law
Candidate must be willing to travel up to 10% of the time
