Full Job Description

Controller

Monmouth County, NJ | Full-Time | In-Office

About the Role

Our law firm is seeking an experienced Controller to oversee the firm's day-to-day accounting operations and financial reporting. This is a hands-on leadership role for a highly organized and detail-oriented accounting professional with prior law firm experience.

The Controller will report directly to our Head of Accounting and will play a critical role in managing the firm's financial operations, supervising accounting staff, overseeing payroll and trust accounting, and ensuring compliance with all financial policies and procedures.

This position offers exceptional long-term growth with the opportunity to develop into a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) role as the firm continues to expand.

Key Responsibilities

Report directly to the Head of Accounting and assist with the firm's overall financial operations
Oversee the day-to-day Accounting Department and supervise accounting staff
Process and manage ADP payroll, including payroll administration, employee changes, benefits coordination, and reporting
Manage attorney trust (IOLTA) accounts and firm operating accounts
Oversee high-volume incoming and outgoing wire activity, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and proper documentation
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and management reports
Manage budgeting, forecasting, cash flow, and financial reporting
Reconcile bank accounts and oversee general ledger activity
Develop and maintain internal controls, accounting policies, and financial procedures
Ensure compliance with all accounting standards, banking regulations, and trust accounting requirements
Coordinate with outside accountants, auditors, banks, and tax professionals
Identify opportunities to improve financial processes and operational efficiencies

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred)
Minimum 5 years of accounting experience within a law firm is required
Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, or Senior Accounting Professional
Extensive experience administering ADP Payroll is required
Experience managing attorney trust accounts (IOLTA) and high-volume wire transactions strongly preferred
Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and internal controls
Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software
Exceptional analytical, organizational, and leadership skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining exceptional attention to detail
Professional, collaborative, and solution-oriented mindset
