Custom architectural millwork since 1957. Nearly everything we build is a one-off.
Windham Millwork is a leader in custom architectural millwork and woodworking solutions and a trusted name in the commercial construction industry, specializing in the fabrication and installation of high-quality, custom wood products. We are looking for a skilled Bench Carpenter to join our bench assembly team.
About the Role
As a Custom Cabinetmaker/Bench Carpenter, you'll assemble custom millwork at the bench — cases, doors, drawers, tops, paneling, and one-off architectural features. Working from approved shop drawings, you'll turn machined components into finished assemblies, install hardware, and check the work against the AWI grade specified for that project.
What You'll Do
- Build custom millwork from approved shop drawings, including frameless (32 mm), face-frame, and hybrid construction, doors, drawer boxes, tops, paneling, and specialty items.
- Read and interpret shop drawings, cut lists, hardware schedules, and finish schedules, confirming every sheet is the current revision before building.
- Verify machined components against the cut list before assembly: count, size, squareness, face and grain direction, and sequence-matched veneer.
- Assemble square, flat, and true, using the joinery the drawing and our standards call for, and check diagonals before the fasteners set.
- Install backs, nailers, blocking, cleats, and bases so the installer has sound anchoring in the field.
- Bore and mount hinges, slides, pulls, locks, and specialty hardware from templates and jigs, and set reveals consistently across an entire elevation.
- Fabricate tops, counters, trim, paneling, and one-off architectural features, and dry-fit multi-part assemblies in the shop before they go to finish.
- Prepare assemblies for finish and shipping: sand to 120 grit, break edges, remove glue and machine marks, mask what must not be finished, then label, protect, and stage in install sequence.
- Self-check every assembly against the approved drawing before it leaves the bench, and flag any discrepancy rather than working around it.
What You'll Need
- Previous experience in custom millwork, cabinetmaking, or architectural woodworking.
- Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, elevations, sections, and large-scale details.
- Working knowledge of cabinet construction — frameless, face-frame, and hybrid — and of cabinet hardware.
- Proficiency with hand tools and portable power tools, and the ability to build jigs and fixtures for repeated operations.
- Knowledge of woodworking materials, including hardwoods, veneers, laminates, and composite panels.
- Attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.
- Ability to work independently and raise problems early rather than working around them.
- Willingness to supply and maintain a basic hand tool set.
Nice to Have
- Experience with 32 mm system construction and European cabinet hardware.
- Experience fabricating solid surface tops and specialty surfaces.
- Familiarity with the AWI Architectural Woodwork Standards.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and move materials and assemblies weighing up to 75 lbs.
- Prolonged standing, bending, and repetitive hand movements at the bench.
- Comfortable working in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, and machinery.
- Safety-toe shoes are required and are not provided.
