Part-time Education Specialist - First Amendment Museum

The First Amendment Museum is seeking an enthusiastic, community-minded individual to join us as a part-time Education Specialist. Averaging just 5 to 10 hours per month, this flexible, on-call role is perfect for retired teachers, graduate students, or history buffs who want to inspire the next generation of active citizens. The schedule is highly flexible and directly tied to incoming school bookings and peak field trip seasons. Potential for additional hours with special youth summer programs.
The primary focus of this role is soliciting, organizing, and presenting virtual field trips to school children across Maine. You will bring history and civics to life by leading engaging virtual and in-person field trips, hosting unique workshops, and helping us spread the word to local schools. Schedule & Flexibility Breakdown
- Monthly Volume: An estimated 5-10 hours per month during peak months.
- Peak Times: Hours will cluster during heavy school field trip months (October–November and April–May).
- Advance Notice: Shift scheduling is coordinated weeks in advance based on school bookings.
- Hybrid Structure: Field trips, virtual field trips, and workshops require on-site delivery, while outreach and prep can be done remotely.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Program Delivery (In-Person & Virtual)
- Lead virtual classes for virtual field trips
- Lead age-appropriate tours for school groups during their in-person visits
- Run hands-on workshops focused on the five freedoms and catered to group requests
- Set up teaching props and tech platforms for scheduled sessions.
Targeted School Outreach
- Email local educators to promote virtual and in-person field trips.
- Handle all booking inquiries via online request forms and emails.
Qualifications and Skills
- Experience: Prior experience in K-12 teaching, museum docent work, or youth instruction.
- Extreme Flexibility: Comfortable with an "on-call" style schedule that varies by month.
- Reliability: Punctuality for scheduled school arrivals and virtual presentations.
- Presentation: Enthusiastic, engaging storytelling style suited for children and adults.
