Position Overview
ME-RAP is a community-led nonprofit network advancing recovery, harm reduction, and equitable public policy across Maine. Our work centers the voices of people with lived and living experience of substance use, recovery, families, and allies. Through statewide advocacy, youth engagement, grassroots organizing, and direct services at our Access Center in Augusta, ME-RAP supports all pathways to recovery, promotes human dignity, and works to make our systems just, effective, and responsive to community needs. Our Center includes peer-led recovery support meetings, harm reduction services, housing and employment navigation, naloxone distribution and overdose response training, community clean-ups, and policy advocacy grounded in lived experience.

The Center Organizer will support the daily operations of the Access Center to ensure smooth delivery of programs and recovery support services during evening and weekend hours of operation. In coordination with the Volunteer Coordinator and Project Doorstep Volunteers, the Center Organizer will also engage in door to door canvassing to increase the communities awareness and support of the Access Center.
Work Environment
The Center Organizer will work onsite at the Access Center and in the surrounding community. This position will be responsible for supporting the Access Center recovery support services, as well as canvassing efforts. Therefore occasional evening and weekend availability may be required.
Day-to-Day Center Operations and Recovery Coaching (85%)
- Support daily operations of the Center to ensure programs, meetings, and services run smoothly and effectively, including by serving as a point of contact for staff, volunteers, and participants regarding Center activities.
- Provide one-on-one recovery coaching to individuals at various stages of recovery to support participants in recovery action planning and efforts to build their recovery capital.
- Host, attend, or facilitate support meetings, Center activities, and community events.
- Support community clean up days to improve community safety and cleanliness.
- Ensure the facility remains clean, safe, and accessible at all times—while staying in full compliance with CDC guidelines for certified Syringe Service Programs (SSPs).
- Maintain accurate records of program participation, outreach activities, and program evaluations, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures.
Project Doorstep Canvassing and Coordination (15%)
- Build and nurture relationships with community members, local organizations, and stakeholders to increase awareness and support of the Access Center’s programs and services.
- Engage in door-to-door canvassing to distribute Naloxone and increase awareness of the Center.
- Advocate for harm reduction and recovery-oriented practices within the local community.
- Collaborate with staff and volunteers to uphold a community-driven approach to programming, ensuring alignment with the needs of participants and the broader community.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Demonstrated commitment to harm reduction principles and recovery.
- Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., Google Workspace)
- Experience providing recovery coaching, peer support, or similar direct support services.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including active listening and cultural humility.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse populations, including individuals in active use.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Certification in Recovery Coaching or Certified Intentional Peer Support, or a similar training or willing to obtain within 6 month timeframe.
- Lived experience in recovery or harm reduction practices (strongly encouraged to apply).
- Experience in community organizing or program coordination.
Compensation and Benefits
- Compensation: $20 an hour up to 40 hours per week
