Full Job Description

Term

Approximately 12 weeks, through mid-November 2026, with possible extension through winter break and beyond.

Immediate Opening

We are seeking a Long-Term Substitute Teacher for Middle School / High School Humanities and Language Arts, beginning on the first day of school. This is a full-load teaching assignment, not a day-to-day substitute role, and it is an urgent hire. Applications are reviewed daily and interviews are scheduled on a rolling basis, and candidates available to start on August 20 will be given priority consideration.

About This Position

This is a defined-term assignment covering approximately 12 weeks of the fall semester, with the possibility of extension. The teacher in this role carries full instructional responsibility for their sections, including planning, grading, parent communication, and department participation. Candidates who excel in this assignment will be strongly considered for future faculty openings at the school.

Position Overview

The Humanities and Language Arts Teacher is responsible for delivering rigorous, engaging instruction in English language arts, literature, writing, and social studies / history to students in grades 6-12. The teacher cultivates strong readers, confident writers, and critical thinkers, while supporting the academic, social, and emotional growth of adolescents and reinforcing the values and culture of our Jewish day school.

Because this assignment begins on day one of the school year, the teacher will set the tone for their classes from the start and will be supported by department colleagues and administration in taking up the established curriculum.

Key Responsibilities

1. Instruction & Curriculum

Teach the established course sequences in literature, writing, and social studies / history across grades 6-12, maintaining curricular continuity through the term
Guide close reading and discussion of literary and historical texts, and teach analytical writing and research skills
Differentiate instruction to meet a range of learning needs and reading levels
Maintain clear records and documentation to support a smooth handoff at the end of the assignment

2. Classroom Environment

Establish a structured, intellectually serious classroom culture from the first day, with clear expectations and routines
Promote respectful discourse, academic integrity, and strong character development

3. Student Assessment & Support

Assess student progress through essays, projects, and exams, and use what you learn to guide instruction
Provide timely, substantive feedback on student writing
Work with learning specialists and counselors to support students with diverse needs

4. Communication & Partnership

Communicate proactively and professionally with parents, including conferences and progress updates
Collaborate with department colleagues, Judaic Studies faculty, and administration

5. Professional Responsibilities

Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school initiatives
Maintain lesson plans, grading, and documentation in a timely manner

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in English, History, Humanities, Education, or a related field (Master's preferred)
Valid teaching certification (or working toward certification)
Experience teaching middle school and/or high school students (preferred)
Strong knowledge of literacy instruction, writing pedagogy, and secondary humanities content
Availability to begin August 20, 2026
