Full Job Description

Status: Full Time / Non-Exempt

Shift: 7:30am - 4:00pm MST

Summary: Acts as a cytogenetic lab assistant, specialist in processing patient specimens, performing tissue culturing on specimens, performing quality control testing, troubleshooting equipment and technical laboratory process problems, prepare reagent aliquots, preparing solutions, and performing instrument maintenance. Produces accurate test results for all patients.

Core Responsibilities:

Follows laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, and maintain records of patient test results.
Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documenting all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed.
Appropriately utilizes stains, fixative and reagents
Prepares reagents and chemicals as needed
Utilizes clerical skills to perform job functions with minimal errors
Receive and enter orders as appropriate
Process specimens for send out to referral laboratories
Monitors computer errors and maintenance of hardware
Researchers and resolves any questionable patient orders
Follows the laboratory's established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance
Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the technical general supervisor
Performs validations of new assay or continuous validation as directed by technical/general supervisor
Attends continuing education programs as scheduled
Stocks supplies and equipment to ensure uninterrupted service
Performs as a back-up staff absences and vacancies, as necessary
Performs all other duties as assigned

General Responsibilities:

Performs, as directed, safety compliance and uses Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), as needed
Participates in Quality Assessment (QA) and Quality Improvement (QI) programs, as directed
Ensures compliance with The Joint Commission, CAP, CLIA, and all other Federal State Regulatory Affairs
Foster a positive team environment and assist coworkers as required

Knowledge and Skills: Effective working knowledge of testing procedures, and excellent mathematical, interpersonal, communication, organizational skills. Good pipetting technique. Fluent in the English language, both written and verbal.

Education: Bachelor of Science in clinical laboratory science, genetics, chemical, physical, biological science, or other related.

Experience: General laboratory experience is required.

Working Conditions: The cytogenetic lab assistant is a laboratory position. Frequent requirements may include: sitting for extended periods, documenting laboratory parameters on a workstation computer and participating in team meetings. Approximately 75% of daily responsibilities will be working both one-on-one and in teams with other personnel. Must possess the ability to communicate in writing and verbally. Must possess good listening and observation skills. Must work well independently or with the team. Standing; walking; climbing stairs; stooping to remove/replace files; good hand-eye coordination; lifting, pulling, pushing, and upper body twisting while handling supplies and equipment; sitting while completing paperwork; using keyboard for computer and word processing needs. Occasional requirements may include: Using hands to manipulate, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; Reaching with hands and arms; kneeling; and lifting/moving objects up to 50 pounds.

Environmental Conditions:

Exposure to some hazardous chemicals in the laboratory. Professional office and laboratory environment with time of each day spent in interaction with management/staff, in addition to planning and working autonomously. Requires teamwork and the ability to handle multiple interruptions; frequently fast-paced; high-pressure; occasionally variable-paced; variable pressure. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided to each employee when needed as determined by policy. Utilization of PPE is mandatory.

Pay: From $21.00 per hour
