GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Perform public safety work for the Executive Protection Bureau - Uniformed Protection Detail (EPB-UPD). Work involves providing law enforcement and security services to protect the Texas Governor¿s Mansion grounds, its visitors, and the surrounding areas while preserving the historical integrity of the site and ensuring compliance with applicable state laws and regulations. Work under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide a high-visibility security posture throughout the Texas Governor's Mansion grounds and surrounding perimeter.
2. Enforce state laws and applicable regulations to maintain public safety.
3. Provide dignitary and VIP protection for official visits and special events at the Governor's Mansion.
4. Monitor and respond to security systems, including video surveillance, alarms, and access control points.
5. Assist in crowd management during peak tourism periods, special ceremonies, and public gatherings.
6. Perform threat assessments, respond to suspicious activity reports, and coordinate with investigative units as needed.
7. Conduct security sweeps before and after special events.
8. Operate screening equipment (metal detectors, X-ray scanners) when deployed for events requiring additional security measures.
9. Provide public assistance and information to visitors, maintaining a professional and courteous demeanor.
10. Prepare reports, document incidents, and maintain accurate activity logs.
11. Serve as liaison with local law enforcement agencies for coordinated response to incidents affecting the Governor's Mansion grounds.
12. Support civil disturbance or crowd-control operations when required.
13. Patrol assigned areas and state office buildings, grounds, and parking facilities to check for security violations.
14. Perform maintenance and servicing of assigned fleet vehicles.
15. Assist with the handling and processing of applicant investigations.
16. Engage in various forms of training such as firearms, arrest and control tactics, and facility protection.
17. May train others or provide guidance to less tenured staff.
18. Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
19. Perform other duties as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:
Education - High School diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience - Must be a retired commissioned officer who has retired from the Employees Retirement System of Texas and whose last position was as a commissioned officer within the department and attained the rank of Trooper or higher.
Licensure and/or Certification - Must be licensed as a Texas peace officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education. If driving is required, must possess a valid driver's license.
Regulatory Knowledge - Knowledge of police methods. Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures.
Supervisory/Managerial/Leadership Skills - Knowledge of management and supervisory methods and principles, performance and productivity standards, and fiscal/budget management. Able to develop plans, policies, and procedures for efficient workflow and overall effectiveness, and provide clear direction to subordinates; promote teamwork and be able to motivate others to accomplish goals.
Interpersonal Skills - Must demonstrate an ability to exercise poise, tact, diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers. Must demonstrate DPS' core values: Integrity, Excellence, Accountability, and Teamwork.
Organizational and Prioritization Skills - Must be organized, flexible, and able to effectively prioritize in a multi-demand and constantly changing environment; able to meet multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines without sacrificing accuracy, timeliness or professionalism.

Travel and/or Schedule - Availability for after-hour and weekend work is required.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary.
