Archivist
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a member of the Legislative Reference Library team, this individual collects, organizes, analyzes, and preserves records, documents, and manuscripts; prepares inventories, indexes, guides, and aids to facilitate access to information; and provides general, legal, and archival reference and research services.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Appraises, organizes, and processes archival collections in paper-based or in electronic formats that may include materials such as photos, recordings, videos, and other documents.
Identifies, analyzes, and arranges records; and prepares inventories, indexes, and finding aids that facilitate staff and public access to records.
Creates metadata using library and archival descriptive standards and controlled vocabularies.
Provides general, legal, and archival reference and research services to legislative offices, state agencies, and the public.
OTHER DUTIES:
May advise legislative offices on archival practices.
May review records for information excepted from the Public Information Act.
May rehouse archival materials and address basic preservation issues.
May digitize a variety of original materials using associated computer hardware and software following set standards.
May assist in indexing legislation and other legislative session-related activities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in history, government, library science or a related field.
Knowledge of professional archival methods, practices, procedures, and standards.
Three years of experience processing archival collections.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Outlook, and Word.
Demonstrated commitment to a collaborative work environment.
Demonstrated excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Master’s degree in library science with a concentration in archives management.
Experience using MPLP methods to process archival collections.
Experience processing digital archival collections.
Experience creating finding aids using DACS and EAD.
Experience with digital preservation tools, such as BitCurator, Bag-It, Archivematica, or Preservica.
Familiarity with standards for care, handling, and housing of archival materials, including rare and fragile items.
Knowledge of Texas state government and the Texas legislative process.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Overtime, including evening and weekend hours, required during legislative sessions.
Ability to lift 50 lbs. and meet other physical demands of the position such as manual dexterity, long-term standing, sitting, and repetitive motions such as bending, reaching, and scanning.

Legislative Reference Library
WORKING HOURS:
8:00-5:00 Monday-Friday, with additional hours during the legislative session.
