Pflugerville Independent School District - Job Description
Job Title/Position: Trainer/Lead Driver Department/School: Transportation

Pay Information: Auxiliary Compensation Plan Supervised By: Transportation Supervisor

FLSA: Non-Exempt Date Revised: January 2020

Primary Purpose:

Providing classroom and behind the wheel training and addressing bus regulations and safety procedures.

Minimum Qualifications (Experience/Education/Certification):

Clear and valid Texas commercial driver’s license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements; at least 21 years of age; 2 Years of bus driving
experience.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Interact daily with drivers, attendants and other employees to ensure safety standards and obligations are met.
2. Communicate emergency situations, accidents, unsafe conditions/acts or any other safety event that will disrupt service to the parents &

students.
3. Attend safety meetings and training relating to State and District requirements for the purpose of presenting and/or acquiring information.
4. Interview, train and motivate staff employees seeking positive actions and reactions.
5. Ensure that all safety programs are implemented and adhered to.
6. Maintain manual and electronic documents, files and records (e.g. licensing, certificate, and medial expiration dates; cumulative hours; etc.)

for the purpose of documenting activities and/ or providing an up-to-date reference and audit trail.
7. Coordinate/support emergency response network when there is a problem.
8. Ensures compliance with District policies and procedures. Discusses any breach of policy and procedure noted with supervisor.
9. Teach classroom and behind-the-wheel training to new trainees and operators needing improvement and driver certification renewals.
10. Provide input on evaluations of trainees and provide training/leadership on improvements needed.
11. Assist with in-service training of school personnel.
12. Instruct commercial driver’s license (CDL) classes; assist with CPR and standard first aid classes; assist in providing informative and

productive in-service meetings for drivers.
13. Perform functions of a school bus driver when needed to assist with coverage of assigned routes that are vacant due to illness, leaves of

absence, termination, etc.
14. Prepare a variety of written materials (e.g. activity reports, training handouts, safety information guidelines, driver evaluations, etc.) for the

purpose of communicating information to bus drivers, other office personnel, school officials, etc.
15. Communicate professionally and effectively with Districts, parents, students, drivers, monitors and company personnel to resolve relative

issues.
16. Assist as needed in the recruitment process, to include advertising and interviewing, conduct pre-employment background checks, in-

services, etc.
17. Provide re-training as needed for affected employees returning to work following a bus accident/incident
18. Follow Educator Code of Conduct & all policies, procedures, laws and State/Federal regulations.
19. Perform other duties as assigned

Special Knowledge/Skills: 

Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam 
Ability to complete required bus driver safety training 
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions 
Ability to use maps and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to follow routes and locate addresses 
Ability to manage student behavior 
Ability to communicate effectively with others 
Ability to operate bus

Supervisory Responsibilities:

None.

Working Conditions (Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Demands):

Tools/Equipment Used: Operate school bus; two-way radio; global positioning system (GPS); safety equipment including but not limited to flares,
reflective signs, and fire extinguisher
Posture: Prolonged sitting; frequent standing and twisting; occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, and pushing/pulling
Motion: Prolonged driving; moderate walking; frequent climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching
Lifting: Limited light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds) on a daily basis
Environment: Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes; work around moving vehicles; regularly work
irregular hours, and occasionally work prolonged hours
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress
