Full Job Description

Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and energetic Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist to empower individuals with visual impairments and other disabilities to navigate their environments confidently and safely. In this vital role, you will provide personalized instruction, support independence, and enhance quality of life through mobility training and adaptive techniques. Your expertise will help clients develop essential skills for navigating both familiar and unfamiliar settings, fostering confidence and autonomy in their daily lives. This paid position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference while working within a dynamic, supportive team.

Responsibilities

Deliver comprehensive orientation and mobility training tailored to each client’s needs, including navigation skills in home, community, and public settings
Assess clients’ mobility skills, cognitive abilities, and environmental challenges to develop personalized training plans
Assist clients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including personal transportation assistance and caregiving tasks as needed
Use specialized techniques such as the use of white canes, GPS devices, or other adaptive tools to promote independence
Collaborate with families, caregivers, educators, and social service providers to ensure consistent support and progress tracking
Collect data on client progress, document sessions thoroughly, and adjust training strategies accordingly
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of best practices in special education, behavioral health, and neurodevelopmental disorders to enhance service quality

Requirements

Experience working with individuals with autism, developmental disabilities, or neurodevelopmental disorders
Knowledge of special education principles and behavioral health strategies for supporting clients with cognitive disabilities
Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL) is a plus for effective communication with diverse clients
Ability to operate a standard passenger car safely for client transportation purposes; valid driver’s license required
Experience in home & community care environments supporting individuals with disabilities or intellectual disabilities support needs
Strong communication skills for client interaction, family engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration
Certification in first aid and CPR; additional certifications related to behavioral management or medication administration are advantageous
Capable of assisting with ADLs such as grooming, mobility assistance, or medication management when necessary
Familiarity with data collection methods relevant to social services or social work settings
Ability to handle caregiving responsibilities with patience, empathy, and professionalism
