Full Job Description

Horizon is seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Assistant Controller to support the Controller in overseeing the day-to-day accounting operations of Horizon Builders. This role has direct oversight of the company’s accounting functions, supervises two direct reports, and plays a key part in the accounting systems conversion from Sage 300 to Sage Intacct. The ideal candidate is organized, proactive, technically strong in construction accounting, and comfortable operating in a fast-paced environment that requires both strategic oversight and hands-on execution.

Horizon Builders Oversight

Provide direct oversight of accounting operations for Horizon Builders
Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting and reconciliations
Supervise and mentor two direct reports
Develop scalable accounting processes and internal controls

Accounting Software Conversion & Technology

Provide hands-on support for the migration from Sage 300 to Sage Intacct
Assist with implementation, testing, data validation, troubleshooting and process improvement
Coordinate with internal teams and third-party implementation consultants
Establish improved workflows, reporting structures and accounting procedures
Support creation and implementation of the company shared-file system
Perform regular technology reviews to identify efficiencies and opportunities

Accounts Payable (A/P)

Conduct final review of invoices prior to processing and payment
Identify invoices and change orders exceeding approved contract values or budgets
Track and monitor key vendor and subcontractor accounts
Troubleshoot TimberScan workflow and invoice-processing issues
Support process improvements and accountability within the A/P function

Accounts Receivable (A/R)

Provide oversight and quality review of project billings
Review monthly intercompany billings and reconciliations
Ensure timely collections and accurate customer balances
Support project managers and accounting staff with billing-related issues

Payroll & Tax Compliance

Add and maintain employee records within payroll systems
Assist in processing payroll
Coordinate payroll-related reporting and reconciliations
Prepare and assist with quarterly payroll tax returns and related filings

Job Costing & Construction Accounting

Review project budgets and prime contracts for accuracy and consistency
Ensure project budgets, commitments and contract values are properly synced between Procore and Sage
Support job cost reporting and variance analysis
Help accounting and operations teams maintain accurate project financial data

4. Required Qualifications

5+ years of accounting experience
Strong understanding of job costing, construction billing and intercompany accounting
Experience supervising accounting staff
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to balance strategic oversight with hands-on execution
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems

5. Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field
Experience in construction or project-based accounting
Experience with Sage 300, Sage Intacct and/or Procore

Pay: $80,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
