Financial Disclosure: As a state employee, you may be required to file an annual Financial Disclosure with the State Ethics Commission. If you are required to file, you will be notified by the Judiciary Human Resources Division and must file within 30 days of employment and no later than April 30th of each subsequent calendar year.
Essential Job Functions:
The Courtroom Clerk position is responsible for facilitating all aspects of court proceedings, while serving as the liaison between the Judges and Magistrates in preparing court orders and records for Baltimore City Circuit Court. Records cases using the Courtsmart System. Prepares, maintains, and processes court orders in accordance with established procedures. Assists customers in person and by telephone.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Prepare Court Docket:
Print court docket.
Ensure all files are present, locate file if not present.
Review prior court order to ensure correct hearing type and status of respondent.
Remove all reports from file for the court to review.
Check for issuance of summonses to parties and writs to various institutions.
Check to ensure all statistics were entered from the last hearing and research each case to ensure information is correct.
Operation Courtsmart in the Courtroom:
Scan docket into Courtsmart.
Tag each case as called.
Playback if required by Court.
Operations:
Assist the Court as needed.
Responsible for preparing, maintaining, and processing court orders/records in accordance with established procedures on Odyssey in Court.
Prepare docket entries on Odyssey in a court file.
Mark and maintain exhibits and other related materials.
Schedule and reschedule hearings, i.e., arraignments, trials, dispositions, and reviews.
Issue writs/warrants/detainers/ jail cards, etc.
Contact various departments to transfer incarcerated parties to court hearings.
Maintain case information by entering/updating case data for statistical purposes.
Assist customers in court and by telephone.
Send copies of court orders to parties that are not present.
Prepare court orders for cases that are not scheduled on the docket but referred to the Court from written correspondence from the public or agency persons.
Verify and update address information for parties.
Search incarcerated partied thru VINELINK.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Diploma (or GED equivalent).
Experience: Two (2) years of work experience, to include one (1) year in court operations or in the fields of criminal justice, parole and probation, legal or financial services.
Note:
A bachelor?s degree may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal/associate?s degree or 60 college credits may substitute the required work experience.
A Paralegal Certificate may substitute the required work experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
Court forms, practices, procedures, protocols, systems, and equipment required to support the specialized work of the assigned unit(s).
Legal terminology and court procedures.
Judicial policies, procedures, and forms.
Basic English and arithmetic to include, but not limited to, spelling, punctuation, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Skill in:
Operation of recording equipment, computer terminals, and related software.
Typing on a personal computer.
Managing priorities to meet critical deadlines while multitasking.
Problem solving.
Ability to:
Acquire knowledge of Maryland Judiciary procedures, rules, practices, regulations, and jurisdictional courts.
Make work decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, rules, and Judiciary policies and procedures.
Apply job-related terminology, policies, procedures, regulations, and laws to define problems, collect data, establish facts, record data, appropriately complete forms, and provide information to customers.
Communicate clearly, tactfully, and effectively with judges, the public, police agencies, attorneys, and other court officials and personnel, both verbally and in writing.
Follow procedures, verbal and written instructions, and protocols for any given assignment.
Multitask, adjust to situations quickly, set priorities, and handle pressure in a fast-paced environment.
Work within time constraints, meet fixed deadlines, and demonstrate good organizational skills.
Handle sensitive or difficult situations requiring discretion and confidentiality.
Understand and carry out complex verbal and written instructions.

Exercise tact, diplomacy, and impartiality in dealing with the public, law enforcement personnel, and attorneys.

Physical Requirements:
Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Equipment, Machinery and Tools:
Zoom and Skype video communication.
Computer to obtain and input case information.
Facsimile machine and scanners to send and receive time sensitive information.
Calculator to configure judgment amounts, court costs, and defendant credits.
Video/Courtsmart System for recording open court proceedings.
Software and Computer Skills:
Judicial Information System, Enterprise Justice, Zoom and Skype Video Communication, Microsoft Office Suite, and Courtsmart.
