The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL) has an exciting opportunity for a Library Services Specialist.
The Specialist provides high-quality reference and research support in person, by phone, and via email and chat service for the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) Health Sciences and Human Services Library (HSHSL). This position provides HSHSL users with information and guidance in finding and retrieving library information resources. The Library Services Specialist answers questions and provides one-on-one instruction to users in conducting library research; searching online databases; and using technologies, tools and strategies to create, seek, use, and manage information. The person in this position contributes to HSHSL communications, including developing, writing, and delivering clear, engaging messaging that promotes HSHSL services, resources, and events across multiple platforms including print and social media. The Library Services Specialist reports to the Head of Information Services.

The HSHSL is one of the largest health sciences libraries in the United States, both in terms of physical space and collection size. With a record of innovative services and programs, the HSHSL has been a leader both regionally and nationally in health sciences librarianship and education. The HSHSL employs 56 full-time employees, including 25 faculty librarians. Opened in 1998, the library serves as a hub for collaboration and learning on the UMB campus. Since 1983, the HSHSL has been the home of the Network of the National Library of Medicine (NNLM), Region 1 and is the current location of the NNLM Web Services Office.
The HSHSL serves the schools of dentistry, graduate studies, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and social work, and is open to other campus students including those from the school of law. The library supports approximately 6,700 students in six nationally ranked professional schools and interdisciplinary graduate studies programs.

Primary Duties:
Responds to HSHSL user information needs using online systems and information seeking skills to evaluate and locate the most appropriate library information resources.
Searches for and retrieves materials.
Educates and guides face-to-face and remote HSHSL users with varying levels of proficiency in the use of technologies, tools, and strategies to create, seek, use, or manage information.
Creates clear, engaging communications to promote HSHSL collections, services, and events through social media, newsletters, and other outreach materials; contributes content ideas and participates actively on the HSHSL Communications Team.
Assists with maintenance of HSHSL information resources, including information discovery tools, guides, and related library resources.
Collects, reports, and assists with analyzing data on collections, usage, service transactions, and customer needs. Generates specialized reports and notices using data collected.
Performs routine library duties, including shelving, organizing materials, and maintaining public service areas.
Upon request, provides input regarding selection, retention, maintenance, and evaluation of all types of library information resources or services.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree.
Experience: One year of experience directly related to the primary duties of the position.
Preferred Experience: Experience providing reference and research support at a library service desk. Experience working with library systems and processes. Experience developing or contributing to communications efforts, including writing for newsletters, blogs, social media, or similar platforms.
Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of the mission and role of college or university library and its primary customers. Ability to learn and apply contemporary library terminology and functions. General knowledge of traditional and emerging practices for describing and organizing information resources. Understanding and ability to apply library and university computing policies and practices that help ensure information quality, integrity, and security. Ability to apply and enforce U.S. Copyright laws and current trends related to access and use of information resources. Knowledge of basic principles of quality customer service, teamwork, and conflict resolution. Ability to work independently and exercise initiative in applying rules, procedures and instructions. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communications skills. Experience and proficiency with one or more technologies or tools used to create, seek, use, or manage information. Ability to learn and operate a variety of common computing and productivity applications (e.g. email, word processing, databases and spreadsheets, content management, web browsers) and specialized library hardware, systems, and software applications. Ability to apply key concepts and best practices for developing, maintaining, and using collections of digital information. Skill in analytical and problem solving. Ability to assist other library staff in selecting and evaluating technology used in libraries.
Hiring Range: $48,138 - $55,609.76 per year, pre-probation (Commensurate with education and experience)
