Controller (Manufacturing & Construction / Millwork)

Position Summary
We are seeking a hands-on, detail-driven Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations of a growing custom millwork manufacturing and subcontract installation business. This role is critical to maintaining financial discipline across both manufacturing and project-based operations, with a strong emphasis on cash flow forecasting, account reconciliation, and regulatory compliance.
The ideal candidate brings a blend of manufacturing cost accounting and construction/project accounting expertise, along with a proactive approach to improving financial visibility, controls, and processes.
Key Responsibilities
Cash Management & Forecasting
- Develop and maintain weekly and monthly cash flow forecasts, with high accuracy and forward visibility
- Monitor liquidity and working capital across manufacturing and installation operations
- Partner with leadership to align cash forecasting with production schedules, project timelines, and purchasing needs
- Identify risks and opportunities related to cash flow and proactively recommend solutions
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Oversee month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
- Prepare and review financial statements, including job profitability, WIP, and cost reports
- Maintain accurate general ledger and supporting schedules
- Implement and enforce accounting policies and procedures
Reconciliation & Controls
- Lead all account reconciliations, including bank, inventory, WIP, and intercompany accounts
- Ensure completeness and accuracy of job costing and revenue recognition
- Establish and maintain strong internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure financial accuracy
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies promptly
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and industry-specific requirements
- Manage external audits, tax filings, and regulatory reporting
- Monitor and enforce compliance with contractual and subcontractor agreements
- Maintain proper documentation for financial and operational processes
Cost Accounting & Job Costing
- Oversee standard costing, variance analysis, and inventory valuation
- Monitor manufacturing costs, labor efficiency, and material usage
- Ensure accurate job costing across fabrication and installation projects
- Support pricing and margin analysis for bids and contracts
Leadership & Process Improvement
- Supervise accounting staff and support their professional development
- Drive improvements in ERP/accounting systems, reporting tools, and workflows
- Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, project managers, and procurement
- Provide financial insights to support strategic decision-making
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership responsibilities
- Strong background in cash forecasting, reconciliations, and financial controls
- Experience in manufacturing and/or construction/project-based accounting
- Deep understanding of job costing, WIP, and revenue recognition
- Proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., QB, Sage, NetSuite, Epicor, or similar)
- Advanced Excel skills
Preferred:
- Experience in custom millwork, fabrication, or subcontracting environments
- Familiarity with percentage-of-completion accounting
- Experience improving systems and processes in a growing company
