IMMEDIATE FULL-TIME OPENING
Lead HVAC Technician
Hands-On HVAC & Mechanical Systems Department Head
Employer: Inspiratus Construction LLC
Location: Bastian, Virginia; travel throughout Bland County and nearby Southwest Virginia
Pay: $25-$35 per hour, based on experience, licensing, and demonstrated capabilities; exceptional candidates may be considered above the range
Schedule: 40 hours guaranteed, Monday-Friday; additional approved hours generally available up to approximately 48 hours at the employee's choice
The Opportunity
Inspiratus Construction LLC is hiring an experienced, hands-on HVAC leader to build and own our HVAC and mechanical systems department. This is not a route-based service position and it is not a desk-only management role. You will lead the work, remain active in the field, establish standards and preventive-maintenance programs, direct helpers, and help hire and develop future junior technicians.
Why This Role Is Different
Unlike a traditional HVAC contractor, we maintain and improve facilities that we own and operate. The portfolio includes wellness resorts, hospitality and lodging facilities, employee housing, commercial kitchens, agricultural operations, recreational facilities, and active development projects. You will see systems through installation, operation, maintenance, and future improvement.
Responsibilities
· Build and lead the HVAC and mechanical systems department while remaining actively involved in installation, diagnostics, repair, and maintenance.
· Take ownership of work planning, priorities, workmanship standards, safety, documentation, tools, parts, and inventory.
· Establish and manage preventive-maintenance schedules, inspection records, equipment histories, and replacement recommendations.
· Diagnose, repair, install, and improve heating, cooling, ventilation, refrigeration, gas-fired, and related mechanical systems.
· Work with package units, heat pumps, mini-splits, forced-air systems, ductwork, thermostats, controls, ERVs/fresh-air systems, walk-in coolers and freezers, and commercial kitchen or facility equipment.
· Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, refrigerant, airflow, control, and three-phase issues within demonstrated qualifications.
· Review planned installations and provide practical input on equipment selection, serviceability, access, reliability, sequencing, and long-term maintenance.
· Select vendors and equipment, order materials, and control departmental inventory within approved project budgets.
· Direct helpers drawn initially from our internal construction team; participate in selecting, hiring, training, and mentoring future junior staff as trust and workload develop.
· Coordinate with the Director of Projects, site leadership, facility operators, inspectors, engineers, utilities, and specialty contractors.
· Maintain the department's work vehicle, warehouse area, tools, parts, and records in a clean and professional condition.
· Support adjacent construction and facility needs when priorities require. The right person is a problem-solver who is willing to step outside a narrow trade lane.
· Respond to genuine emergency facility needs. The organization experienced approximately two HVAC-related emergency callouts during the previous 12 months.
Required Qualifications
· EPA Section 608 Universal Certification - required.
· Demonstrated senior-level HVAC service, diagnostic, installation, or facility-maintenance experience; five or more years is strongly preferred.
· Ability and willingness to function as a hands-on department head, make sound decisions, direct helpers, and verify completed work.
· Strong diagnostic skills and the judgment to seek engineering, manufacturer, or specialty support when needed.
· Ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, equipment schedules, technical manuals, and controls documentation.
· Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
· Reliable follow-through, professional communication, accurate documentation, and a safety-first approach.
· Ability to work on ladders, in mechanical rooms and confined spaces, outdoors in varying weather, and to safely move trade tools and equipment.
Preferred Experience
· Virginia HVAC Journeyman or Master license. The license is preferred, not required; work is permitted through the company's general contracting operations as applicable.
· Commercial refrigeration, gas systems, commercial kitchen equipment, three-phase electrical systems, generators, controls, chillers, or larger commercial equipment.
· Experience planning installations, estimating labor and materials, managing inventory, coordinating inspections, and mentoring technicians or helpers.
· NATE, manufacturer, controls, refrigeration, or other advanced technical certifications.
Schedule and Work Environment
Full-time, in-person field position. Forty hours are guaranteed. Additional approved hours are generally available up to approximately 48 hours at the employee's choice. Work is primarily Monday-Friday with rare evening, weekend, or emergency response.
Compensation and Benefits
· Employer contribution toward health insurance, up to the full employee premium depending on the negotiated compensation package; spouse or family coverage may be supported as part of the negotiated package. Eligibility begins within the first six months.
· One week of paid time off after six months; two weeks after five years of employment.
· Six paid holidays selected by the employee, subject to reasonable advance notice and operational coverage, after six months.
· Company work vehicle that may be taken home. Company fuel is provided for business use; the employee is responsible for personal or commuting fuel/use.
· Company-supported tool purchasing account and necessary equipment.
· Training, licensing, and certification reimbursement.
· Sign-on bonus available for highly qualified candidates, based on credentials and an agreed written offer.
· Overtime paid in accordance with applicable law; overtime must be approved in advance except for a genuine emergency.
· Year-round work, home most nights and weekends, and long-term authority to build a department and team.
Who Will Succeed Here
This role is best for someone who wants real ownership and accountability. You should be comfortable leading from the field, inheriting imperfect existing systems, organizing a department from the ground up, and helping with related facility problems when the team needs you.
