PHARMACY TECHNICIAN

Our Pharmacy Department plays an essential role in supporting safe, effective, and timely medication therapy for patients throughout the hospital. We work collaboratively with pharmacists, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the highest standards of medication safety and patient care.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists with the preparation, distribution, and management of medications and pharmaceutical supplies for hospital patients. This position performs a variety of technical and administrative duties under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist and in accordance with hospital policies, state and federal regulations, and established pharmacy procedures.

The Pharmacy Technician is expected to maintain accuracy, confidentiality, professionalism, and attention to detail while supporting the daily operations of the hospital pharmacy.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assist pharmacists with preparing and dispensing medications for patients.
Accurately enter medication orders and patient information into the pharmacy system.
Prepare medications, including measuring, counting, labeling, packaging, and organizing medications as directed by the pharmacist.
Assist with medication distribution to patient care areas.
Maintain appropriate medication and pharmacy supply inventory.
Restock medications and supplies in designated areas.
Monitor medication storage areas for organization, expiration dates, and proper storage conditions.
Assist with controlled substance handling and documentation in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
Prepare and maintain medication carts, automated dispensing areas, and other medication distribution systems as assigned.
Assist pharmacists with medication reconciliation and other pharmacy-related activities as directed.
Communicate effectively with pharmacists, nurses, physicians, patients, and other members of the healthcare team.
Maintain accurate records and documentation.
Follow all hospital policies and procedures related to medication safety, infection prevention, patient confidentiality, and workplace safety.
Maintain compliance with applicable federal and state pharmacy laws and regulations.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe pharmacy work environment.
Demonstrate professional conduct and protect patient privacy at all times.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Pharmacist-in-Charge or Pharmacy leadership.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

High school diploma or equivalent.
Pharmacy Technician registration or certification as required by applicable Louisiana regulations.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Ability to work effectively as part of a healthcare team.
Basic computer skills and ability to learn pharmacy information systems.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive patient information appropriately.

Preferred

Previous pharmacy technician experience, preferably in a hospital or healthcare setting.
National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT).
Experience with medication dispensing systems or electronic pharmacy systems.
Knowledge of medication names, dosage forms, and common pharmaceutical terminology.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The Pharmacy Technician must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. The position may require prolonged periods of standing and walking, frequent use of hands and fingers, bending, reaching, lifting and carrying pharmacy supplies and medications, and the ability to safely perform duties within a hospital environment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position works primarily within the hospital pharmacy and may interact regularly with patient care departments throughout the hospital. The Pharmacy Technician must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and respond appropriately to changing patient and departmental needs.
