Essential Job Functions
Performs park facilities repair and maintenance functions; receives assignments and performs work in adherence to safety procedures. This position supports the daily cleanliness, maintenance, and operational upkeep of Town parks, restroom facilities, trails, playgrounds, pavilions, and other recreational amenities to help ensure safe, clean, and welcoming public spaces. Maintenance Worker duties include, but are not limited to, the duties described below.
This position performs custodial and general maintenance duties including cleaning and sanitizing restroom facilities, emptying trash receptacles, removing debris and litter, and maintaining the overall cleanliness and appearance of parks and recreational amenities. Mows and trims park grounds; cleans park pathways and roads; trims trees and shrubs; sprays beds and paths for weeds and grasses. Operates vehicles, mowers, and hand-held gas and electrical equipment.
The employee assists with preparing pavilions and park amenities for rentals, programs, and public use, including cleaning, setup, and routine upkeep activities. This position performs basic unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks including painting, minor carpentry, masonry, and related park and facility maintenance activities under direction. Other duties include inspection and maintenance of sports fields and courts; maintains and replaces nets; cleaning of restrooms, shelters, and park facilities; removal of litter. The employee monitors parks and recreational facilities for cleanliness, vandalism, and safety and remediates any issues identified. Performs routine inspections and reports maintenance or safety concerns to supervisory staff. Duties include performance of preventative maintenance activities and routine maintenance checks for restroom facilities, pavilions, playgrounds, trails, and other recreational amenities to support safe and functional operations.
This employee operates light and non-specialized equipment and utilizes basic tools in the performance of assigned duties. Loads, unloads, and transports materials, supplies, tools, and equipment as needed. Maintains inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies. Additional functions include assisting with Town and departmental events, programs, and activities including setup, breakdown, trash removal, crowd support, and other operational duties as assigned.
The employee responds to emergencies or urgent maintenance situations involving accidents, debris, vandalism, weather-related issues or facility issues as needed. The position operates snowplows on Town streets and parking areas during snow removal operations and assists the Streets Division as needed.
Town employees adhere to all safety procedures and guidelines, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), and assist in documenting safety and maintenance checks to support compliance with applicable standards. All other duties performed includerelated tasks as assigned to support Parks & Recreation operations and maintenance needs. This position assists other crews and divisions, as needed, and additional duties may be assigned that are related to the technician’s specialties. Will need to be able to work periodic shifts including nights, weekends, holidays and emergencies.
Education and Experience:
Valid Virginia driver’s license, high school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with landscaping or grounds maintenance preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
General knowledge of the methods, practices, equipment, tools and materials used in park operation and maintenance; playground equipment, repair, and maintenance. Some knowledge of the grasses, flowers, shrubs and trees grown in the area. General knowledge of hazards and necessary safety precautions involved in park operations and maintenance work required. Ability to use hand tools and grounds maintenance equipment. Basic understanding of specific computer programs relevant to position. The ability to communicate effectively to understand instructions; and capability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
Pay: $17.94 - $21.53 per hour
