Job Summary
The Library Assistant provides outstanding customer service while supporting all aspects of library operations. This position assists with circulation services, patron assistance, collection maintenance, programming, technology support, marketing, social media management, statistical reporting, and administrative functions. As a member of a small-library staff, the Library Assistant must be flexible, self-motivated, organized, and capable of working independently while contributing to a welcoming and inclusive environment for all library users.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Patron Services and Circulation
- Greet and assist library patrons in a friendly, professional manner.
- Check library materials in and out using the library management system.
- Register new patrons and maintain patron records.
- Answer telephone calls and respond to public inquiries.
- Assist patrons in locating library materials and accessing resources.
- Provide basic reference and reader advisory assistance.
- Assist patrons with computers, internet access, printing, scanning, copying, and fax services.
- Collect fees and maintain accurate financial records.
- Provide notary services as needed.
- Monitor and respond to library email communications
Collection Maintenance
- Shelve materials accurately and maintain organized collections.
- Read shelves for proper order and accuracy.
- Process returned materials.
- Assist with inventory and weeding projects.
- Create and maintain book displays and promotional exhibits.
- Help ensure collections remain attractive, current, and accessible.
Programming and Community Engagement
- Assist with planning and conducting children's, teen, adult, and family programs.
- Coordinate Story Time activities and related crafts.
- Assist with the After-School Homework Program.
- Maintain enrollment forms, attendance records, and participant information.
- Coordinate volunteer schedules and maintain volunteer service hour records.
- Assist with outreach initiatives and community partnerships.
- Promote library programs and services to the community.
- Support special events, summer reading programs, and educational activities.
Marketing, Social Media, and Public Relations
- Manage and update the library's website with current events, announcements, and resources.
- Manage the library's social media presence and maintain an active posting schedule.
- Create engaging content promoting library programs, collections, services, and community partnerships.
- Design promotional materials including flyers, posters, brochures, and digital graphics.
- Create and distribute the monthly library program calendar.
- Photograph library programs and events for promotional purposes in accordance with library policies.
- Monitor social media activity and respond appropriately to public comments and messages.
- Assist with newsletters and community communications.
- Help maintain a positive and professional public image for the library.
- Coordinate promotion with local schools, community organizations, nonprofits, and businesses.
Technology Support
- Provide basic technology assistance to patrons and staff.
- Troubleshoot computers, printers, copiers, and other library equipment.
- Coordinate with designated IT support providers when technical assistance is required.
- Assist patrons in accessing electronic resources, databases, eBooks, and online services.
- Support technology-related projects and library initiatives.
- Assist with internet usage monitoring and reporting requirements.
Administrative and Reporting Responsibilities
- Maintain library statistics and operational records.
- Compile circulation, attendance, internet usage, and program statistics.
- Prepare reports for Library Board meetings.
- Prepare annual report for the state.
- Maintain records related to programs, volunteers, and library services.
- Assist with grant documentation and special projects as assigned.
- Support library fundraising and community engagement efforts as needed.
E-Rate and Internet Compliance Support
- Assist with E-Rate and USAC documentation and compliance activities.
- Maintain required records associated with internet funding programs.
- Assist with submission and tracking of relevant E-Rate forms and correspondence.
- Coordinate documentation with internet service providers and vendors as directed.
Facilities and Operations
- Open and close library facilities according to established procedures.
- Maintain a clean, safe, organized, and welcoming environment.
- Monitor public spaces and report maintenance or safety concerns.
- Help ensure compliance with library policies and procedures.
- Manage library operations during the Director's absence.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the successful operation of a small rural public library.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Ability to maintain accurate records and statistics.
- Ability to interact professionally with patrons, volunteers, staff, and community organizations.
- Ability to learn new technologies and software applications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher.
- Previous library, education, office administration, customer service, retail, or nonprofit experience.
- Experience working with children, families, and community groups.
- Notary Public certification or ability to obtain certification.
- Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency.

Work Schedule
- May include evenings and 2-3 Saturdays a month.
- Additional hours for special programs or events may be required.
Pay: $12.00 - $15.00 per hour
