Full Job Description

BBFFA accepts children/NMD who may be considered to have specialized needs who require care beyond the normal range of care for foster children because of acute medical, physical, developmental, emotional or behavior problems. In order to qualify for this program the person being considered for placement must be reviewed by a qualified representative of the agency and meet specific components determining their eligibility. The agency social worker will work with the placement worker as noted above and obtain all the required information. A cursory review will be made of the records and if the child or youth is capable of meeting the qualifications for the program the agency representative will review the existing placement options in order to assess availability. Once an appropriate fit is determined, the placement worker will be notified and the placement will be established.

In most cases, children with developmental disabilities will have already been accepted into a local Regional Center for service. If they are a regular client receiving services they will be automatically admitted into the special needs program. Services will be continued as available and additional assessments will be made on a regular basis in order to meet the continuing needs of the child.

REGISTERED NURSE:

BBFFA will have a Registered Nurse (RN) and/or License Vocational Nurse (LVN) to work with the Special Healthcare Needs program to aid resource parents and social workers through consultation and direct supervision of services required due to possible medical conditions. The RN/LVN will be regularly available to aid the staff in case of emergency situations in coordination with the Individualized Health Care Plan, as required. The Registered Nurse will be able to make house calls and meet with the resource parents during regular business hours and be available to make house calls on occasion as the needs of the child require.

Qualifications:

1. Must possess a valid Registered Nurse license issued by the California Board of Registered Nursing.

2. Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age

3. California Driver’s License with appropriate and reliable transportation

1. Experience:

1. At least one year as a pediatric or neo-natal intensive care nurse

2. At least one year working with children and/or families within a diverse demographic population

3. At least one year working with children and/or adults who possess a cognitive or developmental disability

4. Knowledge of community resources available to high risk children and adults

5. General knowledge of the foster care system

6. General knowledge of the Regional Center Services

Verification of completion of the above requirements must be submitted to BBFFA prior to employment. All verification of requirements will be maintained in the personnel file of the agency for review by authorized agencies.

Registered Nurse:

All services will be in coordination with the agency social worker assigned for the supervision of the child’s services. Registered Nurses will not provide services beyond their scope of practice and only provide services authorized for completion under existing laws and licensing limitations. Services will be documented regularly using professional standards. Consultations made with families, community members and agency staff will be completed upon request of the program supervisor, or designee, and may require the Registered Nurse to conduct after hour visits in case of emergency or need of the child.

Duties and Responsibilities: The Registered Nurse shall be responsible for, but not limited to the following:

1. Training of Certified Foster Families and BBFFA staff members in areas related to medical issues observed in children placed within the agency.

2. Management and monitoring of medical conditions.

3. Participation in health care team planning and IPP meetings

4. Documentation of specialized health care and treatment

5. Maintenance and review of specialized health care records

6. Provide support to Certified Foster Families, as required

Special Skills and Abilities: The Registered Nurse will be capable of maintaining a professional knowledge of existing research and be familiar with current industry trends. The RN will be capable of conducting appropriate research and be familiar with existing medical and cognitive journals specializing in the care of people with disabilities. Participation with professional organizations is preferred.

Registered Nurse should be capable of working with a diverse group of people and always present tact, professionalism and ability to resolve difficult situations in a supportive manner. Capability to present information both orally and written is highly beneficial to the position and may require a familiarity with appropriately citing California Codes and regulatory policy.

Line of Supervision: The Registered Nurse will answer directly to the Agency Administrator who will coordinate medical services and consultations with the social work staff.

Pay: $105.00 - $120.00 per day
