The Lead Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for maintaining and repairing ULWR's fleet of trucks, trailers, pickup trucks, and tractors. This role performs a wide range of repair tasks, including preventative maintenance, engine repair, and welding, while also taking the lead in planning work priorities, coordinating with the Site Manager, and guiding fellow team members on technical issues. The ideal candidate brings strong hands-on mechanical expertise along with the leadership skills needed to assign work, support the team, and keep the shop running safely and efficiently.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Inspect, diagnose, and locate mechanical problems on trucks, farm tractors, trailers, and other mechanical equipment.
- Perform a wide range of repair and maintenance tasks, including preventative maintenance, engine repair, and welding.
- Work with the Site Manager to plan work priorities, obtain necessary supplies, and assess the skills needed to complete tasks.
- Assess building systems to help plan work assignments.
- Collaborate with team members to discuss upcoming work assignments and delegate tasks based on each team member's skills and experience.
- Ensure maintenance and repair work is completed in a safe, effective, and timely manner.
- Assist team members with technical issues or advanced repair problems as needed, serving as a hands-on resource and mentor.
- Track and log workers' time, materials, and other resources used for inventory purposes.
- Work with the maintenance supervisor to coordinate topics for safety meetings.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED, and either a two-year associate degree in a Diesel Mechanic/Technician program or five years of experience demonstrating knowledge of the principles and practices of maintenance operations normally obtained through formal training and education.
- Knowledge of the tools, equipment, and procedures used in the maintenance and repair of diesel trucks.
- Knowledge of safety practices related to mechanical repairs.
- Ability to maintain accurate record-keeping practices related to mechanical repairs.
- Ability to inspect and perform minor and major repairs on diesel equipment, including a variety of power-driven equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical automotive and equipment manuals printed in English.
- Ability to use a variety of equipment, including hydraulic presses and pneumatic tools.
- Must have own tools and toolbox (annual Tool Reimbursement Allowance will be provided)
- Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience leading, mentoring, or coordinating the work of other mechanics or shop technicians.
- Experience working with heavy equipment and fleets in an agricultural, waste, or recycling operation.
- Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Experience with inventory tracking, work order systems, or shop scheduling software.
- Familiarity with DOT rules and regulations related to fleet maintenance.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Ability to stand, walk, sit, squat, lay on the ground, crouch, climb stairs, and use hands for extended periods of time.
- Ability to lift objects from the floor to overhead weighing up to 50 lbs. frequently and up to 75 lbs. infrequently.
- Ability to concentrate on diagnostic and repair tasks while managing competing priorities and team assignments.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment when planning work priorities, delegating tasks, and resolving advanced technical problems.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the Site Manager, maintenance supervisor, and team members
Working Environment:
Exposure to unpleasant odors, grease, dirt, grime, wet floors, and noise for extended periods of time.
Works around moving equipment and machinery, including trucks, trailers, and tractors, and must remain aware of surroundings at all times.
Works primarily in a maintenance shop setting, with regular use of hydraulic presses, pneumatic tools, and other shop equipment.
Second-shift schedule, Monday through Friday, 2:00 pm - 12:00 am, with overtime as needed.
