JOB
SUMMARYUnder direct supervision, this position performs a wide variety of routine tasks in support of the municipal library programs, services and activities, including providing customer service, processing materials, organizing collections and assisting with special events and programs.DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIESEssential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions: Maintains the library’s appearance by sorting and shelving books and other library materials, shelving materials placed on reserve, removing materials from book drops, searching for overdue items, straightening all areas of the library, putting everything back in its place, ensuring that books and other materials are correctly arranged on shelves to maintain access to the collection. Assist with moving books and organizing the collections or other special projects as assigned.Assist with special events and programs such as summer reading program kick off and finale, children’s programs, haunted stacks and other similar events.Receives and distributes mail as well as materials donated by patrons.May also assist in responding to more routine patron questions regarding the location of library materials. Available for evening and weekend hours and special events as required.Maintain statistics for monthly and annual reports.Marginal Functions: Perform additional related duties and responsibilities as assigned.QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of: Principles and practices of excellent customer serviceModern office equipment and computer resourcesPrinciples and practices of excellent online etiquette and social media marketingAbility to: Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writingUnderstand and follow oral and written instructionsOperate office equipment, computer equipment, and software programs, especially Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook) desktop publishing software (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) and current social media apps (Facebook, Instagram)Learn to file alphabetically and numericallyCarry out routine clerical and library proceduresEstablish and maintain effective relationships with public and other city departmentsMaintain mental capacity that permits making sound judgments regarding workDemonstrate intrinsic motivation, high ethical and moral standardsProvide excellent customer service to library users in a courteous manner Learn the operations, policy and procedures of the LibraryWork irregular hours involving evenings, and special events as required, while maintaining regular, reliable attendanceClear a post-offer physical, drug test, criminal background and other appropriate testing and requirements. EXPERIENCE and TRAINING GUIDELINESAny equivalent combination of education, training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential functions of the job is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be: Education and/or Experience: Requires a high school diploma or GED or candidates who are currently enrolled in high school or enrolled in a GED test course. Must have the ability to follow instructions; learn basic Library operations; learn basic office clerical and customer service skills; work as part of a team and complete tasks assigned by supervisors. License or Certificate: Possession of an appropriate, valid Texas driver's license.SUPERVISION RECEIVED and EXERCISEDReceives direction from the Public Services Manager and Director of Library ServicesExercises no supervisionWORKING CONDITIONSEnvironmental Conditions: Work is performed generally in an inside facility environment and is somewhat sedentary. Employee will be exposed to computer screens and extensive amount of public interaction, lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling.Physical Conditions: Essential and other important responsibilities and duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for adequate physical performance abilities including moderate lifting, pushing, pulling; bending stooping, kneeling, crawling; reaching over head; the use of fingers, both hands and both arms; the use of both legs; walking, standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; adequate speech, hearing and eyesight required; carry, push, pull, drag or hold light to moderate weight objects; visual acuity and ability to distinguish color and following all department safety regulations and policies.
