Full Job Description

Performs difficult paraprofessional work in assisting the Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney with legal and administrative tasks; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Provides customer service; answers the phone, responds to email inquiries.
Coordinates court schedules; prepares correspondence, subpoenas, and other legal documents.
Maintains records; expunges records as needed.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Provide support to other office staff as needed.
Performs related tasks as required.
Coordinates public information concerning assigned major case prosecutions.

Education / Experience:

Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent; and 2 years of related experience as a paralegal; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Knowledge / Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of legal office practices, procedures and techniques.
Knowledge of legal terminology and spelling.
Knowledge of departmental functions, organization and policies.
Knowledge of the principles, methods and practices utilized in legal research.
Knowledge of municipal law.
Skill in the establishing and coordinating of court schedules; ability to organize and perform work independently.
Skill in the use of computers and software applications related to the essential functions of the job.
Ability to maintain complex office and legal records.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of a wide variety of information.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other agencies, departments, individuals and the public along with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to perform in a complex, rapid pace, challenging environment while providing leadership, management, and coordination of major criminal prosecutions and investigations.

Physical/Mental Demands:

The work is sedentary work which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amounts of force frequently or constantly. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips
Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
Handling: Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand
Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
Kneeling: Bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely
Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
Visual acuity: Have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and/or extensive reading.
Mental acuity: Ability to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed primarily indoors in a relatively safe and secure work environment. This position is not subject to adverse environmental conditions.

Special/Additional Requirements:

Must be at least 18 years old

Subject to a complete criminal history background search and drug screening with acceptable results.
