Position Summary
The Controller is responsible for overseeing the accounting and financial operations of the Sudbeck Companies, a diversified group of businesses including residential construction, manufacturing, retail, and related operations. This position oversees financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, payroll, internal controls, and regulatory compliance across multiple business entities.
Working closely with ownership and company leadership, the Controller provides financial insight that supports sound business decisions while ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the organization's financial information. This role requires a hands-on, entrepreneurial individual who is comfortable managing day-to-day accounting operations while continuously identifying opportunities to improve business performance and operational efficiency.
Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Leadership
- Oversee the accounting and financial operations for multiple companies within the Sudbeck Companies portfolio.
- Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls that ensure consistency and accuracy across all entities.
- Provide ownership with financial analysis and recommendations to support strategic planning, business growth, and operational improvements.
- Ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial records while maintaining compliance with GAAP and company policies.
Financial Reporting & Analysis
- Prepare and present timely, accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for multiple companies.
- Produce consolidated and entity-specific financial reports for ownership.
- Analyze financial performance, profitability, operating costs, cash flow, and key performance indicators.
- Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process while monitoring results against company goals.
- Identify trends and provide recommendations to improve financial performance and operational efficiency.
Cash Flow & Financial Management
- Manage cash flow across multiple companies to ensure adequate liquidity and efficient use of capital.
- Oversee banking relationships, construction financing, operating lines of credit, and other lending arrangements.
- Prepare cash flow forecasts and assist ownership with financial planning and capital allocation.
- Monitor financial obligations and ensure the timely management of company assets and liabilities.
Accounting & Business Operations
- Oversee all accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month-end and year-end close processes.
- Support the financial operations of construction, manufacturing, and retail businesses through job costing, inventory valuation, and operational reporting.
- Maintain accounting software, financial systems, and reporting processes.
- Assist with the setup and administration of payroll and other financial systems as business needs evolve.
- Continuously evaluate and improve accounting workflows and operational processes.
Team Leadership
- Lead, mentor, and develop the accounting team supporting multiple companies.
- Foster collaboration between accounting staff and department leaders.
- Conduct performance evaluations and provide ongoing coaching and support.
- Promote accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement within the finance department.
Risk Management & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and all applicable federal, state, and local reporting requirements.
- Coordinate annual audits, tax preparation, and financial reporting with external CPA firms and advisors.
- Maintain effective internal controls that safeguard company assets and minimize financial risk.
Stakeholder Relations
- Serve as the primary financial contact for banks, auditors, tax professionals, insurance providers, and other external partners.
- Collaborate with ownership and company leadership on financial planning and business initiatives.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with financial institutions and outside advisors.
Skills, Knowledge & AbilitiesFinancial Management & Accounting
- Strong knowledge of financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, and multi-entity accounting.
- Experience managing financial operations across multiple businesses or business units.
- Thorough understanding of GAAP, internal controls, and financial reporting best practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make sound business recommendations.

Industry Knowledge
Experience in one or more of the following industries is preferred:
- Residential construction
- Manufacturing
- Real estate development
Knowledge of construction accounting, job costing, inventory accounting, and percentage-of-completion accounting is highly desirable.

- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to present complex financial information in a clear, practical manner.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively with ownership, leadership, and external partners.
Education & Experience
Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
Experience:
- Minimum of seven years of progressive accounting experience.
- At least three years in a Controller, Accounting Manager, or senior financial leadership role.
- Experience managing accounting for multiple business entities is strongly preferred.
- Experience in construction, manufacturing, retail, real estate development, or closely related industries is highly desirable.
Certifications: CPA preferred but not required.
Compensation is competitive and based on experience.
