Position: Signage & Graphics Designer With Marketing Support
Description
The Signage & Graphic Designer has multiple roles. These include the creation of sign drawings with graphical content, permit drawings, architectural submittal packages and structural drawings with the support of production personnel. Creating drawings and graphics to be used for company marketing is also one of the duties of this position.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Accountable to the sales staff for the timely creation of sign drawings and graphics to be used in the sales process.
- Accountable to the permitting staff for the timely creation of permit support drawings, attachment & structural details to aid in the permitting process.
Drawing details are based on specific building construction scenarios provided by project managers or permitting staff.
- Accountable for the timely support of the production process via the creation of drawings & details to properly convey sign construction & creation of the files needed to process the materials used in the fabrication process.
- Responsible to use their skills in various programs such as CorelDraw, Illustrator,
Photoshop, etc. to create drawings to support the sales, permitting, production and marketing departments goals.
- Responsible to gather & understand the data that is presented to them from the sales, permitting, project management & production teams and efficiently use this information to create drawings & graphical content that is in line with various internal & external client goals.
- Responsible for creating and maintaining sign type & message schedules that will be used by project stakeholders to manage projects with multiple sign types.
- Responsible for the creation of drawings and graphic materials to be used in company marketing materials, social media campaigns & website content.
- Accountable to a certain level of efficiency in the creation of these materials.
Managing heavy workloads and understanding the acceptable hour budgets for a specific task is an important factor in this role.
- Accountable for continual personal improvement and support of the advancement of fellow team members skill levels.
Specific Duties (not necessarily all inclusive)
- The person in this role must be a very good listener to be successful. Work is highly dependent on information from many sources. The end user, the sales & project managers, the physical site survey data, the production staff, etc. etc. The person in this role must consolidate all this data and use it in the creation of the sales, permit and production drawings, which all have a specific purpose.
Depending on previous experience in the sign business or lack thereof. It will be critical to understand how various types of signs are fabricated & installed. There are multiple sources available to further this knowledge and it will be critical to advance your understanding of signage fabrication techniques very quickly if this knowledge is not currently possessed. Work with production personnel, estimating, & the graphics department as much as necessary to gain the required knowledge.
- Modern sign manufacturing involves a large degree of two-dimensional CAD processing using various cutting and plotting machines. Conversion of graphical content into the language these machines understand is a common practice in sign shops. This role will require a large degree of support for this process.
- Conversion of a client’s marketing materials for use in the design process is something that a person in this role will encounter frequently. This area also involves a good understanding of color management as it relates to graphic design. This role will require that colors are represented accurately and support for color correctness through the printing process is crucial.
- Projects with multiple sign types including interior room ID and ADA signs in the tens or hundreds are possible. The efficient creation of shop drawings for these larger projects will require a high level of organization and drawing management techniques. These techniques include maintaining schedules including sign type location & messages, typically in a spreadsheet or graphical format.
- Exterior sign processing can involve outside engineering firms that will specify a number of criteria for the fabrication of a sign. If a sign is not engineered by a third party, a number of these criteria will still apply and are required to secure the permits needed to install a given sign. These may include footing design for ground mounted signs, attachment design for building mounted signs and specifications for the materials used to build the support components and interior construction of the sign. It is not required that this position have the skill to properly specify all the correct information but a person in this position must be able to seek out the proper source for this information in a timely manner as to maintain schedule for the delivery of the drawings required.
- Support for the company’s marketing objectives is part of the role of this position.
Work with the company president, or his designate, to develop new materials for use in social media campaigns, website or other printed marketing programs.
- Workloads in the design department are constantly changing. It is important that everyone in the design department is aware of the level of demand placed on all team members through direct communication and the use of tools such as the labor tracking sheets. All design staff members are required to log their current assignments and track their hour expenditures. Properly logging this information will allow all stakeholders, including fellow designers, to better understand and manage the overall departments objectives and delivery schedules.
Qualifications
- Minimum of three years’ experience with Corel or Illustrator design software.
- Demonstrated ability to understand basic graphic design concepts.
- Basic understanding of the machines, processes and techniques used in the sign making process. Gaining intermediate to advanced knowledge in this area as quickly as possible is crucial.
- General understanding of custom “one off” business principles.
- Experience with safe shop practices and an understanding of the Signs Plus accident prevention program.
- Excellent Written and verbal communication skills.

Pay: $24.00 - $28.00 per hour
