Full Job Description

Position: Senior Center Coordinator

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Department/Site: Public Works / Parks & Facilities

Salary Grade: 120

Union: AFSCME

Position Summary

Under general supervision, the Senior Center Coordinator oversees day-to-day operations and programming of the Senior Center, including planning, organizing, scheduling, and directing activities and services. Responsibilities include program development, community partnerships, volunteer coordination, and ensuring services reflect participant and community needs. The Coordinator must be nimble and creative in adapting programs and developing innovative solutions that support an engaging, inclusive, and responsive Senior Center environment.

Level of Authority

This position works with general independence within established City policies and procedures, exercising judgment in resolving programmatic and operational issues. It leads volunteer, staff and collaborates with community partners to ensure effective, safe, and high-quality service delivery.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Plan, organize and implement a broad range of Senior Center programs and activities, applying creative and flexible approaches to ensure programming remains engaging and responsive to participant needs.

· Oversee daily center operations, including facility scheduling, program calendars, and maintaining a welcoming, inclusive environment.

· Recruit, schedule, assign, train, and supervise center volunteers; provide guidance to ensure effective support for program.

· Build and maintain collaborative relationships with community groups, departments, and partner organizations, using innovative problem-solving to enhance services and resource utilization.

· Conduct outreach and public relations activities, including presentations, newsletters, and public information distribution.

· Evaluate center programs and services; monitor compliance with applicable regulations; adjust programming using nimble, responsive decision-making.

· Prepare program participation reports, progress summaries, and required documentation.

· Count, deposit, and record donations received daily according to established procedures.

· Make referrals to community services and resources.

· Assist SCOA with coordination of congregate meal service.

· Work with City Parks & Facilities Division regarding maintenance needs for the Senior Center and grounds.

· Support fundraising activities and special events, including occasional evenings and weekend.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills

· Principles of program planning, development, and evaluation.

· Creative program development techniques and approaches to fostering innovation in community services.

· Volunteer coordination, supervision, and community engagement practices.

· Conflict resolution, de-escalation, and customer service methods.

· Regulations relevant to senior services, nutrition operations, and community center activities.

· Basic office technology including Microsoft Office and standard office equipment.

Abilities

· Work cooperatively and collaboratively with community organizations, volunteers, and participants.

· Demonstrate the capacity to think and problem-solve in an innovative and solution-focused manner.

· Analyze operational issues and apply sound judgment, including developing creative responses to unexpected challenges.

· Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; prepare promotional and informational materials.

· Maintain confidentiality of participant and organizational information.

· Respond tactfully and effectively to public inquiries and concerns.

· Record, organize, and file relevant information and data.

· Recruit, train, schedule, and supervise volunteers.

Education and Experience

· Bachelor’s Degree; and

· Two (2) years of direct experience in senior citizen provision;

Or any combination of training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses and Certificates

· Valid Washington State Driver's license.

· Valid First Aid and CPR cards or ability to obtain within three months of hire.

Physical Abilities

· Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

· Frequent standing and active movement during program activities.

· May work alone within the facility during portions of the workday.

Working Conditions

· Work occurs primarily within the Senior Center with approximately 10% off-site activities.

· Exposure to general public interaction, standard cleaning chemicals, and normal community center environmental conditions.
