Full Job Description

Position Summary

The One-to-One Paraprofessional provides direct instructional, behavioral, social-emotional, and physical support to an individual student with special needs. Working under the supervision of the Principal, Special Education Teacher, Classroom Teacher, and related service providers, the paraprofessional assists the student in accessing the curriculum while fostering independence, inclusion, and personal growth in a safe, faith-filled Catholic learning environment.

The paraprofessional is expected to uphold the mission and values of Our Lady of the Assumption School by modeling Christian behavior, maintaining confidentiality, and treating every student with dignity and respect.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesStudent Support

Provide one-on-one support to an assigned student throughout the school day.
Assist the student in participating in classroom instruction and school activities.
Implement accommodations and modifications outlined in the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), Service Plan, or educational support plan.
Reinforce academic concepts under the direction of the classroom teacher and special education staff.
Encourage student independence by providing only the level of assistance necessary.

Behavioral Support

Implement positive behavior support strategies and behavior intervention plans as directed.
Assist the student in developing self-regulation, communication, and social skills.
Monitor student behavior and intervene appropriately to maintain a safe learning environment.
Document behavioral observations and communicate concerns to the appropriate staff.

Classroom Assistance

Prepare instructional materials as directed by the teacher.
Assist with classroom organization and learning activities.
Support transitions between classrooms, specials, recess, lunch, and other school activities.
Help maintain a positive, orderly classroom environment.

Personal Care (if required by the student's needs):

Safely transfer or lift students when necessary using proper techniques.
Maintain the student's dignity and privacy during all personal care activities.

Communication

Collaborate regularly with classroom teachers, special education staff, therapists, administrators, and parents as directed.
Maintain accurate records and documentation related to the student's progress and daily activities.
Attend meetings and training sessions as requested.

Catholic Identity

Support and uphold the mission, philosophy, and values of Catholic education.
Model Christian values and respectful behavior in all interactions.
Participate appropriately in school Masses, prayer, and religious activities.
Catholic candidates may be given preference.

Qualifications

Associates Degree or Higher
Associate degree, paraprofessional certification, or related educational experience preferred.
Experience working with children with disabilities or special needs preferred.
Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, specialists, and families.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Demonstrated patience, flexibility, and a compassionate approach to working with students.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

The employee must:

Be in good physical health and able to meet the physical demands of the position.
Lift, carry, or assist with moving up to 50 pounds when necessary.
Stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and reach throughout the workday.
Assist with student mobility and transfers as required.
Respond quickly to student behaviors or emergency situations.
Work both indoors and outdoors during recess, arrival, dismissal, and school activities.

Ability to build positive relationships with students while maintaining professional boundaries.
Knowledge of child development and learning differences.
Ability to follow instructional and behavioral plans consistently.
Strong problem-solving and observation skills.
Ability to remain calm and patient during challenging situations.
Commitment to fostering student independence and success.

Work Schedule

This is a school-year position that follows the academic calendar of Our Lady of the Assumption School.
