OBJECTIVE:
Under generaldirection of the Heads of Youth & Public Services, the person in this position will assist at both the Children’s and Adult Services Desks as needed. This position will work a regular weekly schedule up to 10 hours but may serve as a substitute front-line representative of Hedberg Public Library, when this occurs the weekly hours will be up to 19 hours. This position provides assistance with circulation, readers’ advisory, reference, and other customer service to children and adults, both as individuals and in groups, as well as helping to maintain safe and secure uses of the library. This position may also assist with the preparation and execution of children’s and family programming and other short-term departmental tasks.

RELATIONSHIPS:
Reports to: Head of Youth Services or the Head of Public Services depending on the assignment.
Has regular work contact with Library and City employees, community groups, business community, and the general public.
Has no regular supervisory duties.

Essential Duties

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Uses a wide variety of resources to provide facilitative, computer, reader’s advisory, and reference assistance to library users of all ages in person and over the telephone.
Maintains awareness of activity in the library and monitors activity for general safety and appropriate behavior.
Assists in the circulation of library materials, registers new borrowers, ensures patron confidentiality, and collects fees and charges for missing materials and miscellaneous purchases.
Greets and assists patrons, building relationships to create life-long library users.
Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices.
Performs other special projects and other job duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours.
All employees may be assigned by the City Manager or their designee to perform duties and assume responsibilities that are outside the scope of their work duties when the City Manager has declared a City disaster or the City Emergency Operations Center has been initiated.

Minimum Position Requirements/Qualifications

The requirements listed below are necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Post-high school education is required.
At least six months of public-facing library work or 1 year of customer service work is required.
Access to personal or public transportation for job-related duties.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
The qualifications listed below are preferred, but not required to perform the essential duties of the position. The absence of these qualifications on a candidate’s application does not preclude them from consideration.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred.
Experience working with children and families is preferred.
Spanish language competency is an asset.

A combination of equivalent experience and/or education as determined by the Human Resources Office may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.

COMPETENCIES
For successful performance in this position, the incumbent must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors.

Knowledge:

Working knowledge of library classification system.
General knowledge of computers and data processing equipment (i.e., computer software programs such as those in a Microsoft Office environment).
Thorough knowledge of electronic resources including the internet and education- or library-related sites.

Skills:

Organizational and time management skills to prioritize duties and accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
Exceptional communication skills, both verbally and in writing, paired with a strong customer service background, and effective interpersonal skills.
Collaboration skills to effectively work with others to achieve common goals through communication, teamwork, and problem-solving.
Intermediate level of technical proficiency skills, including computer applications and software such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat.

Abilities:

Ability to compose routine correspondence and routine reports in a clear, concise, logical, and effective manner, utilizing proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, and tone.
Ability to learn and apply new technology in order to provide library services to the public.
Ability to comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and report all unsafe activities or conditions to supervisor.

Supplemental Information

EQUIPMENT, INSTRUMENTS, AND MACHINES:
Machinery and equipment, including personal computer, printer, cash register, telephone, copier, intercom system, and other standardized or specialized library technology equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL FACTORS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a public library. An individual in this position is frequently involved in sedentary work, which requires sitting for the majority of the time. This position occasionally walks, stands, stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, and exerts up to 25 pounds of force by lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects. The employee is frequently required to see/observe, talk/speak, and listen/hear; use their hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects and equipment; repetitive arm, wrist, hand, and eye movements are included. There is frequent twisting, reaching, wrist turning, and grasping. The employee may be required to climb or balance.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of equipment. Employee is required to use cognitive ability to reason, analyze, and verbalize thoughts and ideas. Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes, and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials or tasks.

The employee may, on occasion, be exposed to outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and extreme cold. The employee may work near moving mechanical parts in precarious places; and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic, or caustic chemicals, and vibration. The working conditions in the library environment are comfortable. The noise level in the library environment is generally quiet to moderately noisy.

A regular work schedule of up to 10 hours per week is required for this position, with opportunities to serve as a substitute associate for additional day and evening shifts, Monday through Saturday, as staffing needs arise. Total hours worked will not exceed 20 hours per week.
For purposes of drug and alcohol testing, this position is not classified as safety sensitive.
