The Peer Support Specialist supports the recovery needs of patients receiving Substance Use Disorder treatment at White House Clinics. The Peer Support Specialist is an individual in stable recovery who is able to use their personal, lived experience in recovery to guide and advocate for patients during the recovery process. The PSS serves as a connection between patients/individuals in the community struggling with substance use disorder and recovery supports available to them. The PSS will engage individuals in all points of recovery to teach and model the skills necessary to support long term recovery. As an individual in recovery, The PSS role will require flexibility and self-direction, as well as the ability to problem solve to assist patient in meeting their recovery goals.
- PSS will meet with patients during medical and/or behavioral health visits to assist the primary care teams with engaging patients in SUD treatment services. PSS will not make treatment decisions, but will work with care teams to:
- Enhance patient’s motivation to engage with appropriate treatment services through the use of motivational enhancement strategies and sharing of personal recovery journey;
- Offer referrals and connect patients to alternative levels of care when needed; and/or
- Schedule patients for SUD services at WHC if appropriate
- PSS will maintain contact with patients waiting to receive SUD treatment services at WHC via telephone.
- PSS will work with patients to develop a Person-Centered Recovery Plan, identifying a patient’s strengths, supports, challenges, and recovery needs. PSS will engage the patient in developing recovery goals and a plan to develop the skills, strengths, supports and resources to be successful.
- The Recovery Plan will serve as a collaborative tool with Enabling Services to overcome psychosocial needs and will communicate the Recovery Plan with the patient’s primary Behavioral Health and Medical Providers.
- PSS will remind patients of upcoming appointments, pill counts, random UDS, etc. and help identify barriers that could cause a fail to keep appointment. PSS will work closely with all members of the care team to ensure the patient’s compliance while promoting personal accountability of the patient.
- PSS will follow up with patients who have missed a medical and/or BH appointment in order to keep them engaged in services via telephone and in person contacts, either in the clinic or the community.
- PSS will identify community recovery support meetings (i.e. AA/NA, Celebrate Recovery, etc) and make the information available to the MAT patients. PSS will also attend community meetings to model positive behaviors for patients. PSS will provide transportation to meetings if needed. PSS will encourage patients to remain active in some type of community recovery program if possible.
- PSS will utilize a Telephone Recovery Program to provide 24 hour support to patients at risk of relapse while receiving treatment at WHC. This will include weekly contacts to patients receiving services and regular communication with the care teams regarding updates on patient functioning and needs. PSS will be available to respond to telephone calls from patients reaching out for recovery support during and after clinic hours.
- PSS will serve as a liaison between the treatment team and the patient. PSS will document all contacts in the patient’s EHR chart per organization protocol and communicate regularly with other members of the patients care team.
- PSS will assist the care team in developing action plans that are specific to patients as needed. PSS will meet twice a month with assigned supervisor for required supervision according to state regulations. Supervisor will maintain a history of all supervision meetings with PSS.

Requirements of Position
- Must have completed requirements to become a Kentucky Certified Peer Support Specialist. PSS is responsible for meeting all required supervision and continuing education requirements pursuant to 908 KAR 2:220. WHC will provide supervision for PSS with an organizational LCSW.
- As the PSS position is based both in the community and in clinics, the PSS is responsible for possessing a valid driver’s license and a reliable personal vehicle.
- Employees are responsible for maintaining a thorough understanding of their role in the following protocols and as protocols are updated periodically employees are expected to remain current on any updates. As the program develops, employee is responsible for remaining current on any new or updated protocols relevant to the position.
- Evaluation of Substance Use Disorder protocol
- MAT Induction and Follow Up Visit protocol
- Scheduling MAT Appointments protocol
- PSS will adhere to documentation standards as set out in organizational protocol.
- Assists with other duties or in other departments as instructed by supervisor.

PSS at White House Clinics must have been in stable recovery in the community for a period of at least two years. PSS must have a commitment to helping the Substance Use Disorder population and hold values consistent with those of the MAT services offered by WHC. Successful PSS will hold a commitment to and passion for helping individuals enter and maintain recovery. Successful applicants will be mature and well organized with pleasant personality, have a professional and warm demeanor that facilitates the development of a collaborative relationship with patients, providers and outside resources. Additionally, successful applicants will demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and approach tasks and patient encounters in an energetic and creative manner. The ideal applicant will demonstrate strong initiative and the ability to be a self-starter. PSS will maintain healthy boundaries with patients and staff and adhere to ethical guidelines of the PSS role.
Professionalism
Maintains competency and knowledge of current standards of practice, trends, and developments in related scope of practice through reading and in-services. This is especially important in the areas of insurance coverage and claims, patient flow, scheduling, assuring correct patient information, and handling patient relations. Obeys appropriate dress code as specified in Employee Handbook. Provide superior customer service to all patients, external customers (office staff of other offices, hospital, community agencies, etc.), and co-workers. Serves as an ambassador of the White House Clinics in all conversations and interactions with these parties.

The Peer Support Specialist reports to the Director of Behavioral Health Services for administrative purposes and will receive Peer Support Specialist supervision from an organizational LCSW or the Director of Behavioral Health Services.

This position requires sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment are also required. Position requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Employees will be required lift papers or boxes up to 50 pounds occasionally.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in office environment and involves frequent contact with staff and the public. Position may involve dealing with angry or upset people. Evening and/or weekend work is required. Work may be stressful at times. Work will also be performed in the community in order to assist individuals in recovery to access resources and supports in the community. PSS should expect to meet with individuals in community settings such as the Emergency Department and Jail in addition to the clinic.

Evaluated annually by the Director of Behavioral Health Services and providers as appropriate.
