Medical Assistant

Responsible for providing professional clinical care for patients under supervision of the physician and clinical management. May be assigned to a specific provider or assist other clinical assistants and providers as deemed necessary.

Qualifications: Medical Assistant Training

Essential Job Responsibilities:

Fulfills patient care responsibilities as assigned that will include checking schedules and organizing patient flow; making appointments; accompanying patients to exam/procedure room; assisting patients as needed with walking transfers, collecting specimens, preparing for exam; collecting patient history; performing screenings per provider guidelines; assisting physicians with various procedures; EMR entry; relaying instructions to patients; answering calls, and providing pertinent information.

Performs short evaluation of the patient’s situation to estimate severity of illness and/or injury via phone and directs them to the emergency room or sets up an appointment with their provider.

Determines urgency of seeing the patient based on assessment and on familiarity with a patient’s condition and history via patients EMR. Confers with providers as needed. Takes medication refill requests via phone or portal and follows refill guidelines to send requests to providers.

Fulfills environmental responsibilities as assigned that may include setting up instruments and equipment according to protocols; cleaning exam/procedure rooms, instruments and equipment between patient visits to maintain infection control; sterilizing instruments and keeping appropriate records of sterilization; ordering, sorting, storing supplies; and restocking exam rooms.

Fulfills clinical medical assisting responsibilities which may include medical/surgical asepsis, sterilization, instrument wrapping and autoclaving; checking vital signs; physical examination preparations; clinical pharmacology; drug administration through various routes including injection; prescription verifications; applying dressings; CLIA waived testing and safe handling of blood borne pathogens and biohazards.

Participates in multidisciplinary teams to improve patient care processes and outcomes.

Other duties as assigned.

Computer proficiency

Ability to communicate effectively in the English language in person, by phone and in writing.

Must project a pleasant and professional image

Requires adherence to all policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards for safety, attendance, punctuality and personal appearance.

Office hoursMonday – Thursday (8a-8p) Friday (8a-5p) and Saturdays (9a-3p). Hours worked based on assignments/needs of clinical staff.

Experience: Minimum of one year medical experience

Education Requirements: One year of medical assistant training – Medical Assistant Certification preferred

Physical Requirements:

Standing / sitting for long periods of time

Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds

Must be able to use appropriate body mechanic techniques when making necessary patient transfers and helping patients with walking, dressing etc.

Manual dexterity sufficient to operate keyboard, copier , telephone and other office equipment

Occasional stress caused by multitasking and level of responsibility

Work Environment : Combination of office, exam and other clinical settings. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, biohazards common to a clinical setting.
