Full Job Description

A&J King Artisan Bakers is looking for a full-time pastry team member to join our team. If you have a passion for bakery and food production, can work independently as well as in a team, and want to work with high quality ingredients in a bakery that has been fortunate to be able serve the community for almost twenty years we would love to hear from you. We are looking for hardworking reliable folks who are dialed in and ready to contribute to our daily production needs and expectations.

This position is a great combo position allowing you to learn and hone two main sets of skills. It will include both proofing, baking, and finishing, as well as pastry prep work.

About The Bakery:

We are an award-winning artisan bakery specializing in medium-to-high volume, high-quality breakfast pastries such as hand rolled croissants, muffins, scones, cookies, tarts/pies, rustic and classic seasonal desserts, as well as hearth baked breads such as sourdoughs, baguettes, ciabatta, and whole grains.

All of our products are made fresh daily from scratch ingredients. We source locally and regionally whenever possible. This includes primarily dairy, produce, and grains. We also offer espresso and lunch options in our café and participate in farmers markets.

We also proudly produce and distribute baked goods to a wide variety of customers through our wholesale program providing breads and pastries to top restaurants, cafes, and shops on the North Shore, Boston, and Southern New Hampshire. Winner of Best of Boston in 2009 and 2012 as well as Best of North Shore every year since 2008.

Our Mill:

Back in 2022 we added a New American Stone Mill to our bakery production processes. This allows us to mill all our own organic whole grains in house, sourced regionally. This will create an even higher quality and more sustainable product than ever before. General Scheduling:

We prioritize maintaining static, long-term schedules for everyone's sanity - no ever-changing weekly or monthly schedules.

8 HOUR SHIFTS OFFERED: forty hours a week Thursday-Monday Schedule

Thursday & Friday: 1 pm - 9pm pastry prep shifts

Saturday, Sunday, Monday 5pm-1am, mix and bake shift

· Subbing for co-workers is also expected to cover vacations or illness.

· Working extra hours during holiday periods ad the busy season (summer & fall) is also expected.

· Closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

Shift Duties: This list is not exhaustive.

-Monitor the proofing, garnishing, egg washing and baking of various laminated pastries and other simple yeasted items.

-Bake off and garnishing of other breakfast pastries such as scones and muffins.

-Bake off of seasonal tarts and galettes.

-Bake off of loaf cakes

-Bake off of cookies

-Mixing of small batch yeasted doughs

-Mixing, portioning, and baking of various quick bread items
-Scone production: Mixing, sheeting, cutting
-Cookie production: Mixing, scooping, sheeting
-General food preparation using a variety of sweet and savory ingredients. Examples could include jam production, curds, pastry creams, etc

-Other food preparation duties as assigned based on the seasonality of our menu.
- Being ready to learn new recipes based on seasonal offerings

Expected Equipment Usage:
- Use of multiple sheeters.
-Use of mixers from countertop kitchen aid on up to 80 qt Hobart Mixers and 200 lb spiral mixer.
-Use of rack ovens and convection ovens.

APPLICANT MUST:

*Previous baking ideally in a bakery setting is a required.

* Must have regular weekend and evening availability.

*Be reliable and regularly attend shifts. Employees must consistently attend shifts and understand the concrete nature of the work we do here. Attendance is important.

*Have some basic hands-on professional cooking/food preparation experience. Not just home cooking experience. This is non-negotiable. NOTE: Home baking is amazing and wonderful but is NOT considered food service experience.

*Be able to work in a fast paced environment with a sense of urgency and organization to complete all baking tasks on schedule.

*Be able to multitask, prioritize, and work independently.

*Be a team player.

* Be excited and passionate about food.

* Be able to lift and carry 50lbs, stand on their feet 8-10 hours in a potentially hot environment. Have endurance. Being a baker is a very physical job!

* Have hands and wrists capable of repetitive motions.

* Have a desire to work quickly and have endurance.

* Be a friendly team player. No jerks.

* Be able to take constructive criticism and work to improve their craft.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Employees must be authorized to work in the U.S.

Wages:
To start this position will range from $21.50/hour-$24.00/hour and is based on experience and performance during stage. This minimum hourly wage per hour is calculated on a combination of a base hourly wage and "shared success wages" that all employees benefit from in their hourly pay every paycheck.
