Overview
The Michigan Community Health Worker Alliance (MiCHWA) is seeking a highly organized, relationship-oriented Contract Workforce Engagement Specialist to support the Rural Health Transformation Community Health Worker (CHW) Workforce Project.
The Workforce Engagement Specialist will support targeted outreach, partner coordination, and participation follow-up with CHWs, CHW employers, healthcare and public health organizations, community-based organizations, and other partners across rural and partially rural Michigan. The role will help strengthen participation in the workforce assessment, reduce incomplete submissions, identify engagement gaps, and support representation across organizations and communities.
The Specialist will work collaboratively with MiCHWA's project team and evaluation partner to conduct outreach, support stakeholder engagement and listening sessions, track participation, and help organizations navigate project participation.
This is a short-term 1099 independent contractor engagement, primarily remote/work from home, compensated at $24 per hour for approximately 400 total project hours, averaging approximately 80 hours per month based on project needs and agreed-upon deliverables. Equipment and necessary project technology will be provided for the duration of the contract.
About MiCHWA
The Michigan Community Health Worker Alliance (MiCHWA) is a collaborative 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and statewide leader in Community Health Worker (CHW) workforce development, training, credentialing, registry administration, employer engagement, and advocacy. Since 2011, MiCHWA has worked alongside CHWs, CHW employers, healthcare and public health organizations, community partners, state agencies, and other stakeholders across Michigan.
MiCHWA's mission is to promote and sustain the integration of CHWs into Michigan's health and human services organizations through coordinated changes in policy and workforce development. Equity and CHW leadership are central to this work, with CHWs actively represented throughout MiCHWA's governance, staff, programs, and initiatives.
Through statewide partnerships, training and credentialing, workforce data and infrastructure, employer support, technical assistance, and policy initiatives, MiCHWA advances its vision that Michigan has a trained and sustained CHW workforce.
Responsibilities
- Conduct targeted outreach to CHWs, CHW employers, healthcare and public health organizations, community-based organizations, and other project partners.
- Support engagement across rural and partially rural Michigan, including outreach to underrepresented regions and employer types.
- Build and maintain productive relationships with participating organizations, CHWs, and community partners.
- Conduct timely and consistent follow-up to support participation and completion of workforce assessment activities.
- Help participants understand project activities, submission expectations, and available support.
- Identify barriers affecting participation and coordinate with the project team to address or escalate them.
- Support recruitment and coordination of stakeholder listening sessions, technical review meetings, and other engagement activities.
- Document stakeholder feedback, participation barriers, emerging themes, and follow-up needs.
- Maintain accurate outreach, contact, participation, and follow-up records within project tracking systems.
- Monitor participation across organizations, geographic areas, and partner networks and help identify gaps requiring additional outreach.
- Support collection of workforce information and follow up on incomplete submissions as appropriate.
- Coordinate with the Project Supervisor, Project Coordinator, Data Specialist, evaluation partner, and other project team members to support timely and complete information collection.
- Leverage statewide and regional partner networks to expand project reach and participation.
- Support engagement-related communications, meeting coordination, documentation, reporting, and project deliverables.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow applicable project documentation and data-governance requirements.
- Participate in scheduled project meetings and provide timely updates regarding outreach progress, participation challenges, and emerging needs.
Skills, Education & Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher in public health, community health, healthcare, human services, social work, communications, nonprofit management, community development, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant professional experience.
- Demonstrated experience in community engagement, stakeholder outreach, workforce development, public health, healthcare, human services, or a related area.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
- Ability to engage effectively with CHWs, employers, community organizations, healthcare and public health partners, and other stakeholders.
- Experience conducting outreach and follow-up through email, phone, virtual meetings, community meetings, or other communication channels.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate contact, outreach, participation, and follow-up records.
- Ability to manage multiple relationships, assignments, and deadlines in a short-term project environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently on agreed-upon project deliverables while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
- Comfort using Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, contact lists, databases, CRM systems, or similar project-tracking tools.
- Commitment to respectful, inclusive, equitable, and community-centered engagement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in public health, community health, healthcare, human services, social work, communications, nonprofit management, community development, or a related field.
- Community Health Worker certification, training, or professional experience.
- Experience working with CHWs, CHW employers, or community health programs.
- Experience engaging rural communities or organizations serving rural populations.
- Experience in public health, healthcare, behavioral health, human services, or community-based organizations.
- Experience with employer engagement, workforce development, coalition building, stakeholder engagement, or partnership development.
- Experience supporting listening sessions, focus groups, community meetings, surveys, assessments, or other data-collection activities.
- Familiarity with Michigan's healthcare, public health, health and human services, or community-based service landscape.
- Experience supporting government or grant-funded initiatives.
Contract Details
This is a 1099 independent contractor engagement compensated at $24.00 per hour, with approximately 400 total project hours, with an anticipated level of effort of approximately 80 hours per month, although actual hours may fluctuate based on project needs and agreed-upon deliverables.
The work is primarily remote/work from home, with participation in scheduled virtual project meetings and occasional in-person project or stakeholder activities as needed.
MiCHWA will provide equipment and necessary project technology for the duration of the contract to facilitate secure access to project systems and information. Equipment remains MiCHWA property and must be returned at the conclusion of the engagement. This contract does not include employee benefits.
