BILLINGS FAMILY YMCA JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Group Exercise Instructor FLSA Status: Part-time, Non-Exempt

Reports to: Health & Wellness Director Revision Date: 05/2026

POSITION SUMMARY:

A Group Exercise Instructor leads dynamic, safe, and engaging fitness classes in alignment with the Fitness Director’s vision and guidelines. They maintain current group exercise certifications while fostering a welcoming, energetic, and encouraging environment that supports member motivation, satisfaction, and long-term retention.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Leads group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
Conducts energizing, fun and motivational classes.
Conducts safe and educational classes.
Is able to work with a diverse participant group of all ages and fitness abilities offering safe modifications and alternatives as needed.
Keeps accurate class attendance records.
Arrives early for class and stays after if needed from members.
Communicates effectively with supervisor.
Maintains class averages that are set forth by supervisor.
Sub for others when needed.
Make the Class Announcement.
Writes out card to the members.
Dress in appropriate work attire as outlined in the Employee Dress Code, always wearing a nametag, and perform all duties in a safe and conscientious manner.
Adheres to all safe practices by following consumer‑boundary policies, adhering to procedures for supervising high‑risk activities, promptly reporting suspicious or inappropriate behavior or policy violations while maintaining strict confidentiality
Complete all required annual and bi-annual training requirements for child abuse prevention, anti-harassment, and updated policies.
Keep all required certifications current.

· Embraces new ideas to enhance both staff and member experience and works cohesively with staff across all departments to support a positive, diverse, and inclusive YMCA environment.

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Must hold current personal training or group training certification.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

· Must be able to lift and move up to 45lb plates and barbells. Must have the ability to walk around the entire Fitness areas, make rounds up and down stairs, and sitting for only 10 minutes at a time maximum.

· Maintain physical stamina to lead multiple classes or training sessions in a single day.

· Stand, walk, or move continuously for extended periods (typically 60 minutes or more per class/session).

· Perform dynamic movements including squatting, lunging, jumping, kneeling, and reaching in various planes of motion.

· Demonstrate proper exercise form with full range of motion for instructional purposes.

Pay: $15.00 - $22.00 per hour
