CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA)
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
1. SKILL LEVEL AND EXPERIENCE:
A. Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant as required by state and federal law.
B. If applicant is an Aide in Training, certification must be obtained within four months of hire.
C. Must complete orientation required by company policy.
D. Must complete health screening and TB test (if required) within two weeks of employment.
E. Must become familiar with and comply with all local, state, and federal regulations relating to the job.
F. Must show within three (3) days of hire, satisfactory evidence of identity and eligibility for employment.
G. Previous experience as a CNA and experience in working with geriatric residents is preferred and may be required.
2. COMMUNICATION AND DECISION-MAKING SKILLS:
A. Must possess the ability to work well and communicate effectively with other employees, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, the general public, etc.
B. Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform required duties.
C. Must be perceptive, with good judgment and decision-making/problem-solving skills.
D. Must be able to understand and implement the plan of care and assess residents.
E. Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions.
3. PERSONAL CHARACTERISITCS:
A. Must show courtesy and respect to other employees, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, the general public, etc.
B. Must maintain good personal hygiene and dress and groom appropriately.
C. Must not be a habitual abuser of drugs (prescription or nonprescription) or alcohol.
4. WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENTAL PARAMETERS:
A. Must be very flexible and willing to cover shifts for other employees that are on vacation, sick, etc. Shift work will be required.
B. Must be willing to work holidays and weekends.
C. Must possess the ability to work in a wet or humid environment.
D. Must be able and willing to work with body fluids, excretions, extreme odors, etc., while using universal precautions.
E. Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including the Aids and Hepatitis B viruses.
F. Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, hostile people within the facility.
5. PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
A. Must be able to sit, walk, run, lift and carry in excess of 75 pounds, bend, climb, kneel, squat, stoop, push, pull, grasp, reach arms above head, and have hand and finger dexterity.
B. Must be able to rapidly assist in the evacuation of all residents from the building in case of emergency.
C. Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of working daily with geriatric residents and dealing with emergency situations.
D. Must be able to see, hear, and smell sufficiently to ensure the personal comfort, dignity, health, and safety of the residents, and to assure that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
E. Must be in good general health and be emotionally stable.
F. Must be able to perform the essential job functions without posing a direct threat to residents, self, or others.
6. EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:
Must be able to operate the following equipment: fire extinguisher, blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, weight chair, hoyer lift, thermometer, restraints, whirlpool bath, gait belt, hair dryer, rollers, curling iron, and other equipment as required to do the job.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. POLICIES:
A. Report on time as scheduled and follow all company policies and procedures.
B. Attend staff meetings and inservice sessions and must complete 12 hours per year continuing education.
C. Become thoroughly familiar with emergency procedures and all applicable nursing procedures currently in use.
D. Must be able to perform duties in a timely fashion, and within the prescribed sequences and schedules.
E. Must be able to perform assigned tasks with a minimum of supervision and develop awareness for and a willingness to perform other tasks, as needed, without constant supervision.
F. Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing practices.
G. Must respect all resident rights, including the confidentiality of resident care information.
H. Follow all established safety precautions when operating equipment, and report hazardous and defective equipment or conditions to your supervisor.
I. Must be cooperative with other departments and be courteous and respectful in dealing with them at all times.
J. You must report immediately to the Charge Nurse, to the Administrator, and to the proper legal authorities if you have reason to believe a resident has been physically, emotionally, or sexually abused, or been a victim of theft of their personal property.
K. Participate in and respond professionally to surveys (inspections) conducted by government agencies.
L. Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, cheerfulness, enthusiasm, and love, giving the resident the quality of service you would want to receive personally.
2. PATIENT CARE:
A. The primary purpose of your position is to provide your assigned residents with routine daily nursing care in accordance with current regulations, established nursing care procedures, and as may be directed by your supervisors, and to provide quality patient care on a consistent basis.
B. Assume the authority, responsibility, and accountability necessary to carry out the assigned duties.
C. Assist residents as needed with activities of daily living. This includes bathing, hair care, nail care, oral care, shaving, dressing, eating, pericare, restraining (if ordered), assisting to and from bed, toileting, turning, transferring, lifting, changing when needed, etc.
D. Bathe each resident according to schedule. Change bed linens completely on bath days, more often as needed. Clean showers and tub rooms thoroughly before and after each use.
E. Make rounds regularly on each shift and assist each resident as needed, making sure they are safe, clean, and comfortable.
F. Always respect resident privacy and confidentiality including all details of resident care. Refer all questions regarding patient’s status to the Charge Nurse and all questions regarding operation of care center to the Administrator.
G. Safeguard and use appropriately all resident belongings and appliances: hearing aids, eye glasses, dentures, clothing, personal property, etc.
H. Escort residents to scheduled activities (recreational, religious, etc.) according to care plan.
I. Bring residents to the dining area, serve trays, feed residents as needed, and provide assistance to those not totally independent. Pick up trays and replace in kitchen cart for depository. Document meal intake percentage.
J. Fill resident water pitchers with ice water at least once a shift.
K. Perform restorative and rehabilitative nursing tasks as ordered. This includes turning and massaging bedfast residents every two hours, giving exercises as ordered, ambulating, checking and releasing restraints every two hours for 15 minutes, toileting every two hours or as ordered or as needed.
L. Inform the Charge Nurse of any observed change in resident’s condition. This includes decrease in level of response, alteration in bowel function, skin lesions, changes in skin color or temperature, bruises, rashes, falls or other accidents, altered behavior, etc.
M. Accurately document all duties performed on the appropriate records. This includes flow sheets, charts, notes, accident reports, intake and output records, record of restraints, etc.
3. LAUNDRY & CLEANING:
A. Make sure all resident clothing is properly marked and returned to the owner after being laundered.
B. Take or send soiled linen and clothing to the laundry in properly secured laundry bags as soon as the bag is full and at the end of each shift, whether the bag is full or not. Linens soiled with feces, vomitus, blood, or any other bodily waste products must be thoroughly rinsed in the hopper room before being sent to the laundry.
C. Keep resident rooms clean and orderly. (This includes night stands, dressers, over-bed tables and closets.) Mop up spills and clean messes made by residents as needed.
D. Help maintain cleanliness of work areas, break areas, and linen closets. Make sure that equipment and supplies are properly stored before leaving for breaks and at the end of each shift.
E. If a resident has been discharged, have the cleaning staff completely clean and disinfect the area and get resident room ready for to be reoccupied.
Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Charge Nurse or the Director of Nursing within the scope of CNA certification.
