One year experience preferred. PACU, Acute Care, ER or ICU experience preferred.
1. Responsible for patient’s admission and pre-operative care; holistic preparation for surgery, considering all needs, including pre-operative education, escort/family member education, psychosocial needs, and acting under established protocols, practices and standing orders.
2. Coordinates necessary lab work required for individual patients, documenting and reporting patient results. Retrieve all EKG’s, Echo, Cardiac clearance, medical clearance and scans in chart.
3. Responsible for the patient’s post-operative care and stabilization; holistic preparation for return to the home environment, considering all needs, including post-discharge care, escort/family member education, educational and psychosocial needs, acting under established protocols, practices and standing orders.
4. Performs thorough and accurate continual patient assessment, anticipating potential problems and reporting pertinent assessments to the anesthesiologist, supervisor and/or surgeon appropriately.
5. Documents actions in medical record completely and accurately in a timely manner.
6. Keeps safety of patient, self and others a primary concern at all times; acts appropriately in an emergency situation (i.e. cardiac/respiratory arrests, malignant hypothermia, or drug reactions)
7. Acts as discharge nurse when assigned, giving holistic and thorough discharge instructions.
8. Demonstrates good nursing knowledge base and rationale for actions, including cardiac monitoring.
9. Supervises and directs, as delegated, the activities of non-professional personnel.
10. Utilizes equipment and supplies effectively and cost efficiently, assisting with stocking, replenishing and preparation of supplies.
11. Reports pertinent information to team leader, clinical director and administration.
12. Makes post-operative phone calls, assessing patient’s status and reporting any pertinent information to supervisor and/or anesthesiologist.
13. Performs and documents daily assignments, including general housekeeping and maintenance of work environment.
14. Reports to Team Leader needed repairs or maintenance of equipment or building. In the absence of team leader or Administrator, notifies the appropriate repair services and follows up to be certain the problem is resolved.
15. Maintains current BLS, ACLS, and PALS Certification.
Sedation Nurse Roles and responsibilities:
The registered nurse administering and managing the care of patients receiving sedation/analgesia medications is able to:
1. Demonstrate the acquired knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, cardiac arrhythmia recognition and complications related to sedation/analgesia and medications.
2. Assess total patient care requirements before and during the administration of sedation/analgesia including the recovery phase.
3. Understand the principles of oxygen delivery, respiratory physiology, transport and uptake, and demonstrate the ability to use oxygen delivery devices.
4. Recognize potential complications of sedation/analgesia for each type of agent being administered.
5. Possess the requisite knowledge and skills to assess, diagnose and intervene in the event of complications or undesired outcomes and to institute nursing interventions in compliance with orders (including standing orders) or institutional protocols or guidelines.
6. Demonstrate competency, through ACLS or PALS or appropriate competency assessment, in airway management and resuscitation appropriate to the age of the patient and to meet facility requirements.
