Position Summary
Vestal Asphalt Inc., a leader in asphalt paving, pavement preservation, and heavy highway construction throughout New York and Pennsylvania, is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Estimator to join our team. The Estimator plays a critical role in the successful planning and execution of projects by preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for municipal, county, and state roadway projects.
The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and organizational skills, experience in roadway construction, and a thorough understanding of asphalt paving and pavement preservation techniques. This position requires close collaboration with our sales team, project managers, field operations, office personnel, suppliers, subcontractors, and town, county, and state agencies.
Essential Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate quantity takeoffs and cost estimates from plans, specifications, and bid documents.
- Analyze project specifications, contract documents, and construction drawings to determine labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor costs.
- Solicit and evaluate pricing from vendors, suppliers, and subcontractors.
- Prepare competitive bid proposals and assist with bid submissions.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits as required.
- Coordinate with sales staff to develop pricing strategies and customer proposals.
- Work closely with project managers and field personnel to ensure smooth project handoffs following contract award.
- Communicate with town, county, state, and other governmental agencies regarding project requirements and bid specifications.
- Maintain current knowledge of NYSDOT, PennDOT, municipal, and industry specifications and standards.
- Assist with budgeting, change orders, cost tracking, and project forecasting.
- Review completed projects to compare estimated versus actual costs and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Develop and maintain estimating databases, unit pricing, and historical cost information.
- Support operations by providing technical and pricing assistance throughout project execution.
QualificationsPreferred Experience
- Experience estimating roadway construction projects.
- Experience with asphalt paving and pavement preservation operations is strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of chip sealing, crack sealing, microsurfacing, slurry seal, milling, paving, and related highway construction techniques is highly desirable.
- Experience working with municipal, county, state, and DOT contracts.
Education
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Equivalent construction industry experience will be considered in lieu of formal education.
Required Skills
- Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, specifications, and contract documents.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple estimates and deadlines simultaneously.
- Proficiency with Google Docs or the ability to learn
- Experience with estimating software and project management software is preferred.
- Ability to build positive working relationships with customers, contractors, suppliers, and government agencies.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to travel to project sites throughout New York and Pennsylvania.
- Ability to occasionally walk uneven terrain and active construction sites.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
