Job Description
The Custodian plays a key role in maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming facilities and grounds across campus. This position takes ownership of assigned zones and ensures that classrooms, administrative buildings, dorms, halls, and athletic facilities remain well maintained, presentable, and ready for daily use. The role involves a variety of cleaning tasks, physical activity, and regular movement throughout the campus environment.
Responsibilities

Clean floors, ramps, and stairs by sweeping, wet mopping, dust mopping, scrubbing, or vacuuming as assigned.

Service, clean, and supply restrooms, including replenishing necessary supplies and ensuring sanitary conditions.

Gather and empty recycling and trash from designated areas and dispose of them properly.

Clean and polish fixtures to maintain a neat and professional appearance throughout the facilities.

Replace light bulbs as needed to ensure adequate lighting in all assigned areas.

Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors using appropriate cleaners, sponges, and squeegees to maintain clear and streak-free surfaces.

Mix water, detergents, or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions according to provided specifications and safety guidelines.

Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment to maintain a clean and dust-free environment.

Steam clean or shampoo carpets as needed to maintain cleanliness and appearance.

Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors to preserve floor quality and appearance.

Clean, replace, and hang blinds, drapes, and entrance mats as required.

Collect and deliver soiled items to designated locations for cleaning or disposal.

Clear sidewalks, drives, and adjacent areas, including shoveling snow to maintain safe walkways.

Lock, unlock, and secure buildings as directed, maintaining awareness of building conditions and facilities.

Maintain awareness of building and facility conditions and promptly report abnormalities, safety issues, or security concerns.

Identify and report needed building repairs to the appropriate channels.

Assist with snow removal activities as necessary to support campus operations.

Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned to support the overall cleanliness and safety of campus facilities.

Allocate and adapt to different zones across campus based on management requests and operational needs.

Work primarily in administrative buildings and, as needed, in dorms, halls, and athletic facilities to complete assigned cleaning tasks.

Interact courteously with students, faculty, and other building occupants, providing helpful and respectful customer service when questions or needs arise.
Essential Skills

6 months to 1 year of custodial or janitorial experience is required.

Demonstrated experience with core cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and dusting.

Ability to stand and walk for the duration of the shift, including covering large zones such as lecture halls, student unions, or athletic facilities.

Ability to bend and squat to reach hard-to-clean places and low surfaces.

Ability to lift and pull up to 50 pounds, including moving furniture when needed to clean, mop, or vacuum around and under items.

Ability to perform work that requires medium to heavy physical effort on a consistent basis.

Customer service mindset and professional demeanor, with the ability to interact respectfully with students, faculty, and staff.

Willingness to work assigned shifts, including 2nd shift (Monday–Friday, 5:30 p.m.–2:00 a.m.) and/or 3rd shift (Sunday night–Friday morning, 10:00 p.m.–6:30 a.m.).

Reliability and accountability in following cleaning schedules, safety procedures, and zone assignments.

Work Environment
The work is organized into defined zones across campus, and custodians may be assigned to different zones based on operational needs. Most work occurs in administrative buildings, with additional assignments in dorms, halls, and athletic facilities as required. The role involves regular exposure to typical campus environments, including classrooms, offices, common areas, restrooms, and public spaces. The position is physically demanding and fast paced, requiring standing and walking for the entire shift, frequent movement between areas, and occasional lifting or moving of furniture and equipment. Custodians must be willing to handle a wide variety of cleaning tasks, including spills and general messes, and to get dirty when necessary to restore cleanliness; however, they are not expected to handle dangerous or harmful materials. Work occurs primarily on 2nd and 3rd shifts, with overtime offered on a voluntary sign-up basis and managed by seniority. Training and orientation may be conducted in group sessions, allowing multiple new employees to start together and learn standard procedures, equipment usage, and safety practices.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $15.50 - $15.50/hr.
