About the Role
As an Ambulance Biller/Coder with Marshall EMS Billing, you'll play a vital role in ensuring ambulance transport services are billed accurately and efficiently across Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance, and patient billing. Success in this role means maintaining accuracy, resolving claim issues proactively, and communicating effectively with internal team members and external partners.
Important: This role has two firm requirements with no exceptions: (1) an active Certified Ambulance Coder Certification (CAC), and (2) California EMS and ambulance billing experience. You do not need to live in California, but you must have hands-on experience billing California EMS/ambulance claims (Medi-Cal, CA-specific payer rules, etc.) to be considered.
What You'll Do
- Assign appropriate ICD-10, HCPCS, and CPT codes specific to ambulance services, and apply correct modifiers
- Review Patient Care Reports (PCRs) for completeness, accuracy, and medical necessity documentation
- Monitor claim status, work denials/rejections, and prepare appeals with proper documentation
- Maintain assigned accounts receivable and prioritize aging/high-value claims
- Interpret Explanation of Benefits (EOB) and act accordingly
- Stay current on payer-specific rules, especially the Medicare ambulance fee schedule and local coverage determinations
- Identify and flag compliance risks or documentation gaps; recommend workflow improvements
What You Bring
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Certified Ambulance Coder Certification (CAC)
- California EMS and ambulance billing experience required (residency in California is not required — you must have direct experience billing CA EMS/ambulance claims)
- Strong knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid ambulance billing regulations
- Strong knowledge of HCPCS and EMS billing modifiers
- Experience with insurance and denial resolution
- Strong data entry accuracy and attention to detail
- Proficiency with billing software, ePCR systems (e.g. Zoll Billing, Traumasoft), and Microsoft Office/365 (Excel, Word, Teams, SharePoint)
- Working knowledge of HIPAA regulations and safe handling of PHI
- Professional written and verbal communication skills
- A dependable team player who takes ownership and follows through
- NEMSIS or EMS patient care report system experience is a plus
Medical Billing and Ambulance Billing are two very different things - please apply only if you have Ambulance Billing experience.
Schedule, Pay, and Perks
- Schedule: Monday–Friday, generally 9am–4:30pm (in your time zone, as assigned)
- Location: 100% remote — no commute, no gas, no wear and tear on your car
- Compensation: $19–23/hour, depending on experience
- Equipment provided: laptop, headset, keyboard, mouse
- You'll need a dedicated, distraction-free home workspace with reliable high-speed internet, structured to protect confidential information (HIPAA compliance)
