Full Job Description

Position Summary

The Caseworker supports attorneys by assisting with client services, case preparation, and coordination of resources for individuals represented by the Public Defender's Office. This position helps ensure clients receive appropriate support while facilitating communication between clients, attorneys, courts, and community service providers.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Conduct client interviews to gather background, social history, and other relevant case information.
Assist attorneys in preparing cases by collecting records, documents, and supporting information.
Maintain regular communication with clients regarding appointments, court dates, and case updates.
Identify client needs and connect individuals with community resources, including housing, mental health services, substance use treatment, employment assistance, and social services.
Coordinate with probation officers, treatment providers, social workers, and other agencies to support client needs.
Prepare written reports, case summaries, and mitigation materials for attorneys and the court.
Assist with obtaining medical, educational, employment, and other records relevant to client representation.
Maintain accurate and confidential case files in accordance with office policies and legal requirements.
Monitor compliance with court-ordered programs and assist clients in meeting case-related obligations.
Provide administrative support as needed, including scheduling appointments and maintaining case documentation.
Attend meetings, trainings, and court proceedings when required.
Any other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, Human Services, or a related field preferred.
Experience working in criminal justice, legal services, social services, or case management preferred.
Strong interviewing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and those experiencing crisis or trauma.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple cases and meet deadlines.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and case management software.
Valid driver's license may be required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of the criminal justice system and court procedures.
Understanding of community resources and social service programs.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
Ability to establish rapport with clients while maintaining professional boundaries.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced legal environment.

Working Conditions

Office environment with frequent interaction with clients.
Regular travel to courts, detention facilities, and community agencies may be required.

Physical Requirements

Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods.
Ability to lift and carry files or materials up to 20 pounds.
Ability to use standard office equipment, including computers and telephones.
