ROLE SUMMARY
Seven Industries Limited is a Jamaican manufacturer of tissue paper, garbage bags, non-woven bags, and hygiene products. We are seeking a skilled Machine Operator & Technician who can independently set up, operate, and troubleshoot our blown film extrusion line, bottom seal bag-making machine, and flexographic printer. The right candidate keeps production running at target quality and output — and when equipment goes down, they diagnose and fix it fast.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Blown Film Extrusion Line
- Set up and start the mono-extruder blown film line (1-meter line) for each production run, including resin loading, die setup, and bubble formation
- Monitor and adjust key process parameters:
◦ Melt temperature profile across barrel zones
◦ Blow-up ratio (BUR) and frost line height
◦ Haul-off speed and winder tension
◦ Film gauge and width
- Diagnose and correct common blown film defects including:
◦ Transverse direction (TD) splitting from bubble instability
◦ Gauge variation causing winder wrinkles
◦ Die lines, fish eyes, gels, and pinholes
◦ Film blocking and poor optical clarity
- Perform screw and barrel purging, die cleaning, and screen pack changes
- Conduct first-article checks (thickness, width, weight per unit area) and log results
- Coordinate with Chinese equipment supplier for remote technical support when needed
2. Bottom Seal Bag-Making Machine
- Set up the bottom seal machine for each SKU: film roll loading, sealing jaw alignment, temperature settings, and cut length
- Operate the machine at target speed while maintaining seal integrity and bag dimensions
- Diagnose and resolve seal quality issues:
◦ Weak or incomplete bottom seals
◦ Burn-through or film deformation from excess heat
◦ Misalignment, skewed cuts, or uneven perforation
- Perform jaw and blade replacements, timing belt adjustments, and sensor checks
- Conduct in-process quality checks: seal strength, bag dimensions, and print registration
- Minimize film waste during changeovers and startup
3. Flexographic Printing
- Mount flexo plates and set up ink systems for each print job
- Mix and manage solvent-based or water-based inks to achieve correct viscosity and color match
- Set up and control print registration across all colors
- Identify and correct print quality defects:
◦ Misregistration or color shift
◦ Streaking, pinholing, or ink starvation
◦ Smearing, offsetting, or ink bleeding
- Clean and store anilox rolls, doctor blades, and impression cylinders properly
- Conduct drying/curing checks and ensure print adhesion meets customer standards
4. Maintenance & Documentation
- Execute preventive maintenance schedules for all three machines
- Maintain a downtime and fault log, recording cause, corrective action, and time to repair
- Track consumables usage: resins, inks, plates, blades, sealing elements
- Flag recurring faults and recommend engineering improvements
- Train junior operators on safe machine operation and quality standards
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Required
- Minimum 3 years operating a blown film extrusion line (mono or multi-layer)
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot blown film defects without supervisor direction
- Experience operating bottom seal or T-shirt bag-making machines
- Working knowledge of flexographic printing: plate mounting, ink management, and registration
- Ability to read and interpret machine manuals, wiring diagrams, and process parameter sheets
- Basic mechanical aptitude: able to replace belts, bearings, blades, and sealing elements
- Strong attention to detail and quality — able to catch defects before they become scrap
Preferred
- Exposure to PLC-based machine controls
- Technical/vocational certification in electrical, mechanical, or plastics technology
CORE COMPETENCIES
Technical Problem-Solving
Ownership & Accountability
Diagnoses faults systematically; doesn't guess
