The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare is seeking a forward-thinking Public Health Medical Director & State Epidemiologist to serve as the state of Idaho's lead authority on epidemiology and medical public health efforts in Boise. This position This role guides surveillance and outbreak response, provides medical direction for public health programs, and serves as a key spokesperson for the Division and Department. The position builds strong partnerships across healthcare and government, oversees bureau level budgets, and supervises key public health leaders. Ideal candidates bring strong clinical and epidemiologic expertise, strategic leadership, and a commitment to protecting the health of Idaho communities.
This position is not eligible for telework.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
- Review and interpret public health surveillance data to identify concerning cases, outbreaks, and trends, and recommend appropriate responses.
- Partner with the Deputy State Epidemiologist to align epidemiology goals, priorities, and procedures with Department and Division policies.
- Guide and maintain epidemiologic data systems, ensuring effective data collection, analysis, reporting, and system updates.
- Provide strategic medical direction for Division public health programs in alignment with the Strategic Plan and Division priorities.
- Represent the Division with Idaho medical providers, agencies, and professional organizations, serving on committees, boards, and workgroups as needed.
- Review and approve Division program workplans, performance measures, and public facing materials such as press releases, web content, and newsletters.
- Serve as the Division and Department’s primary media communications point of contact for subject matter expertise.
- Build and maintain communication networks and lead collaborations with local, state, federal, public, and private partners.
- Review and manage Bureau budgets, ensuring compliance with guidelines, participating in quarterly and annual budget processes.
- Supervise Bureau Chiefs and other assigned personnel, providing coaching, training, and direction.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
You must possess all the minimum qualifications below to pass the exam for this position. - Applicants must be licensed or eligible for licensure to practice medicine and surgery by the Idaho State Board of Medicine. Licensure must be obtained prior to appointment.
- Considerable knowledge of public health principles.
- Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of epidemiology.
Below is preferred experience. It is not required for the position but applicants with this experience may receive consideration over other applicants.
Significant experience in public health and epidemiology. Typically gained by at least five years of work in a public health setting or a degree in a public health related field (master's or higher) or a completion of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemic Intelligence Service program.
